The latest major Canon EOS R5 C firmware update had an annoying bug that was quickly spotted by users. The bug was found after the first couple of days of release, which was on June 15, 2023. It seems to have taken more than a week for Canon to acknowledge it and pull the firmware update.

I expect that we'll see v1.0.4.2 in the very near future, as Canon firmware fixes seem to take priority.

If you have installed Canon EOS R5 C firmware v1.0.4.1 and haven't run into the bug, it is explained below.

Theres a bug in new R5C firmware for photography shooters. Found by Vitali Beliak.

Shooting photos in one of the C1 C2 C3 custom modes it can get confused and think it has the R5 pixel shift feature resulting in huge file sizes. Have tried it and can confirm. Doesn’t really effect me as I never use the C1 ect modes but could be annoying to some.

“Just switch it into one of custom modes. Turn off camera, then turn it back on. The pixel shift should be on at this point. I tried resetting settings, but it didn't help.” – Vitali Beliak

  1. Glad they pulled it and I suspect that Canon will resolve it soon. As cameras' firmwares become increasingly more complex, conflicts and issues are more likely to manifest.

  2. Yay. They quoted my post. glad they left in name of the guy who originally found it. I just help spread the news. All credit to him.

I’m guessing it’s a weird bug because it’s easy for me to reproduce 100% of the time but other people on these forums have tried it and I’ve seen YouTube’s do the exact same thing I do and not have an issue.

Hopefully canon sort it and release a fix soon.

We didn't find it, Credit is important if you know whom to credit!

  4. Bugs aside - loving the battery life. I actually took it out of the cage and using it stripped down now, no external battery ( I rarely shoot stills) There are still some refinements to be made but this firmware is a massive leap. We should start a request list.
