In this patent application (2024-025100), Canon describes the optical formulas of some pretty impressive zoom lenses.

In this patent, we see the impressive Canon RF 24-105 F2.8L IS USM Z embodiment, and it's just as impressive as the lens is in real life.

So we know that at least one zoom in this patent application became a reality. But it's the other zoom that is especially interesting to me in this embodiment. The 15-60mm would certainly have me selling a kidney to acquire it, as I can pretty much state that this is around 80% of my images are captured in this range on a crop camera. The image height isn't given, but the half angle of view of this lens makes it an APS-C lens, and not a full-frame lens. The half angle of view for a full frame of a 15mm wide angle would be around 58 degrees. This translates into a 24-100mm lens (approximately) for APS-C shooters.

As with all patent applications, this is a look into Canon's research and may not be an embodiment that makes it into an additional product. But this gives us a look into Canon's research.

  1. around 120mm in length, not that bad IMO
I love the 24-105 f/2.8, but it is too big for most gimbals. The 15-60 f/2.8 would solve that problem and basically act like a 24-105 f/4 when used on something like R5C in S35 mode. The internal zoom also vastly helps with using a gimbal.
  2. Doesn't that include the 20-ish mm for the flange to sensor distance?
Yes, it does. No matter how many times one of us posts the basic fact that these patents are for optical formulae and the 'lens overall length' is from the front surface of the front element to the sensor, some people still make that mistake.
  3. I would love it!
Finally a Lens that would fit perfect at R7 for Portrait (with APS-C). Nearly like a 24-100 at Full Format.
I think many apsc users will be happy with this, but I guess they will find some reason to complain

I hope, anyone who would like it, SHOULD state it here! And at any other place, where Canon-People might read it ;-)
  5. This could be just the lens I've been waiting for. Just hope the price isn’t prohibitive. Just think: ...combined with an R7ii ! Could have me relinquishing all thoughts of going Fuji.

I'm gonna guess if it makes it into production, it'll be higher in price than what fuji is offering, but probably better quality in terms of build quality.

Just MY Opinion! Very good. I was thinking of Fujifilm too. The (for me - as very interested, long Year hobbyist) very good R7 NEEDS minimum one very good RF-S lens. Best would be an "L" 15-60 f/2.8 ! Please CANON - come on with this possibly fast.
