Canon Patent Application: Mixed Ultrawides and RF-S 10-20mm F4.0

In this patent application (2024-007656), Canon looks to create small ultra wides for both full frame and crop. One of the designs is curiously either similar or is the RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3. If it is the actual RF-S 10-18, then it also gives us the lowest back focus distance for the RF mount that Canon feels comfortable with. Of course, this can be easily seen by looking at images of the 10-18, and while it does sit pretty far back into the mount, it doesn’t seem to sit back 10mm (going by images, the lens seems to sit back around 6mm, or a back focus distance of around 14mm). The embodiment is detailed here.

                   Wide angle Intermediate Telephoto
focal length 10.30 14.00 17.50
F number 4.63 5.41 6.13
Half angle of view 53.00 44.30 38.00
Image height 11.28 12.50 12.95
Lens total length 74.63 72.93 73.78
BF 10.97 10.97 10.97

There is one full-frame lens described in the embodiments, but while it’s 15-30mm, its elements do not match up to the commercialized Canon Lens RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM.

One intriguing RF-S lens that some may be interested in (including me!) and it’s the 10-20mm F4.0 which is also an inner zoom design of a constant 75mm (or 55mm for the lens itself). On the camera, the lens would sit around 46mm out from the mount making it a very small compact lens. I don’t think Canon considers the RF-S mount a serious enough platform to create specific fast more professional zoom lenses for. However, I have been wrong before, so if there’s a lens in there worth mentioning, I’m going to assume it’s this one.

  1. One intriguing RF-S lens that some may be interested in (including me!) and it's the 10-20mm F4.0

Yes. definitely the most interesting lens here. Though I wish Canon would also look at taking advantage of the shorter flange focal distance in mirrorless, to design wider lenses. Something like 9-20mm would be cool. Maybe even an 8-20mm doesn't have to be so big in a mirrorless APS-C design?

But I also fear Canon doesn't take "prosumer lenses" seriously on the APS-C platform. Maybe it is more realistic to put your hope on a 3rd party company, if Canon opens the lens-mount? :-/ ... (The described 10-20mm design has reduced image height already at "intermediate" zoom-level, so also a bit sceptical about the optical quality of it?)

    Agreed.

So do the RF 10-20/4 and RF 14-35/4. How do you feel about the optical quality of those lenses?

I know Canon often reduce image height at the widest. Including those fullframe zooms you mention.
But I don't remember seeing reduced image height already in the middle of the zoom range before, as the data sheet of RF-S 10-20mm patent application says.
    But I might remember wrong?
  4. Wish Canon would make a Sigma-like 10-20 at 2.8. Probably never gonna happen.
Right?? Sigma has the 10-18/2.8, 18-50/2.8, and coming soon the 50-140/2.8. APS-C f2.8 zoom trinity.
