  1. Just going by the picture, the Canon looks to have some function in the unique design.

    1) The lens looks bigger and has more room for movement. Bigger lenses in compacts tend to have better quality.

    2) The placement and size of the flash, it looks like it’ll be more useful than everyone elses.

Again, going by the picture…. might be different in person.

  2. Yeah, the great looking Olympus folded optics. You go ahead and buy that camera for its great looks, ok?
Some of us which are interested in the actual *results* quality will go ahead and get the ugly Canon.

  3. F2.8 is a bit mean for underwater. F2.0 would’ve been a better place to start. Leica/Pana were able to do it on the D-Lux 4/LX3.

Having said that, if I was going on holiday I’d still pick one up!

  4. Hej, the only new interesting camera, even if it’s super ugly.
F2.8-4.9 is a rather good surprise, they don’t even have that in the A1xxx-A2xxx. I guess F2.0 is not archieveable with a lens like that.
But why put 12Mpixels in that ? And no PTvAvM, bad canon.

  5. With it only being waterproof to 10m, this is a “snorkel – splash” camera, and for that purpose, the optics are adequate, as is the flash … most applications will be “sunshine bright”, etc.

The FIRST bigger question will be how well does its LCD display do in those same bright daylight conditions? This is because the common snorkeler’s composition will be floating on top and shooting down, which points the LCD display up at the sky (and sun).

And the SECOND bigger question is … when Canon is able to offer this sort of product, then how come it seems that the 5Dmk2’s weatherproof sealing is so poor? :-P

    -hh

  6. Now, now, no need to resort to cheap snipes. I really doubt the shots are going to differ in quality by that much. For one thing, Canon’s is a 12MP whereas Olympus’ is a 10MP. Granted, Olympus’ is a folded optics system (3.6x zoom) whereas Canon’s is a regular optics system (3x zoom). Which you may find more useful and which has better quality has yet to be seen.

If a slightly lower picture quality will allow me to not spend twice as much (one for a normal-looking camera and one for a beach camera), then so be it. You don’t think Canon could have squeezed the D10 into a much more compact package, especially when they have the same ruggedness specs?

  7. I guess the flash being closer to the lens would not cast awkwardly angled shadows, but wouldn’t that increase the chance of red-eye in group / portrait shots?

Also, just going by the D10 specs and the Tough-6000 specs, the Tough 6000 has a stronger flash (at ISO 800, DP Review doesn’t specify the D10 at what ISO).

  8. Looks like they tried real hard to make it look like the Olympus line up for SW,,, with the aqua blue faceplate,,,

*but it’s kinda ugly, so maybe Olympis WONT sue $)
    ,,,

    I’ll still probably get one,,,

  9. This looks like Fisher-Price or v-tech created the design. I guess it’s aimed for kids going to the pool or beach this summer. If you are an adult, I suggest you find something else.

Seriously, Canon needs to consult with Apple, the Elph designs are coming out of left field.

  10. So after playing w/the Olympus SW/Tough cameras a bit, I like the location of flash and lens on the Canon more…but why no underwater housing! 33 feet is nothing! I hope the next model will have housing then it would be worth the purchase. I really think Canon dropped the ball on this one… guess I will wait and continue using my A510 and DC-60 case… Anyone tried any other underwater camera and housing duos for underwater photos? Mine is old and slow and its time to upgrade!

  11. Yes Sadly No Housing and it looks like something from ro bo cop.

Do Canon really think of who is wanting these camera and for what reason. Do they ever listen to the feed back the public give. I am still using the a640 , have flooded 2 that was costly . have written to canon and also been in to canon marketing here in malaysia. And they still are not being practical.

You may say why don’t I use and SLR with a housing. They are to expensive and to cumbersome to do macro micro underwater photography. In Malaysia all the life is small. So a compact is much better to use. Use less air too. Now I need a water proof camera that goes to macro fast IS 3200 12.5 MP flash over ride to use with my Inon and a good depth of field F16 or lower. Not just the F8 that I have been using. fast easy white balance.
The punch line A GOOD HOUSING WITH ROUND FRONT LENS PORT SO YOU CAN ATTACH OTHER LENSES> The water proof ness of the camera is just an insurance A refectory inside the housing or fiber optic bit to direct the flash to an external one. That would be cool.

  12. I dont understand why your all complaining about the design. I think it looks good, Im probably going to buy one of these.

  13. Key for me will be to wait and see the reviews of Canon D10 picture quality against the Olympus 8000.

    Im expecting Canon to win

Then its down to cost for a final decision which to buy

  14. I agree. I bought an Olympus 8000, took it back in 3 days because the pics were terrible. Had to pay a 15% restocking fee, but I didn’t care. I don’t care how much fun it is, if the pics are lousy what’s the point?

  15. Great discussion guys.

I took my Olympus 770SW (tough’s predecessor with a 10M /33Ft waterproof rating )in to a 6 metre deep shark tank at Cape Town’s Two Oceans Aquarium some weeks ago. When I reached the bottom of the tank and tried to use the camera it wasn’t working. When I got out it became clear that the 6Metre depth and pressure had ruined it, despite the 10Metre rating… not good.

I’m about to replace it and am considering this new Canon D10. If anyone actually has one I’d love some feeedback. The Olympus had a HUGE delay time between depressing your finger and the shot being taken, not great to ‘capture’ much. Picture quality was alright not great but any measure.

    Thanks!

  16. When will canon wake up to the real world. Who are these designers?
the SLRS I wrote to them 4 years ago saying they should put a multi view screen on them live view. Now nikon had beat them to it. I keep telling them to design I good waterproof camera and a housing to match up to 40 mts with a round lens port to use with WA underwater lenses. Oh Boy , why ate canon so stubborn. I am becoming put off by them now. This thing the D10 I have looked at my customers . Its horrid . OK for winter sports. Scratches easily . And No housing . As its to compact . The flash is far to close to the lens. Hay why not have two flashes one either side .

  17. I just bought the D10 for my mom and after testing it, I must say I’m VERY impressed. It’s easy to use (important for my mom – she’s 72), and versatile as well. I shot some macros, as well as landscapes with no real work or setup on my part. Picture quality exceeds my expectations for a point and shoot. Durability was important, and while it’s a bit bigger than most compacts, the size isn’t too bad.

I scuba dive, and I would use this over my Sea Life DC-1000 but I didn’t see a waterproof case that can get me to 140 feet. If Canon offers a case for this, I’ll definitely by one for myself. For mom – this is a perfect little gem that just can’t be beat!

  18. I ordered d10 last week. anytime i can receive it by next week. My main purpose of getting this d10 is for casual use, for places such like snokerling etc, which my camera dslr sony A700 is not suitable to use in places like that.

The design is very subjective to individual. Just like (another man’s food is another man’s poison). But i like this design very much because 1.The design of its Own not like other camera with a very common design n look common.

How good or how bad, yet to know, til i receive it next week. But i only notice it dont have a Raw File Format.

  19. mama and I have looked at both olympus and the cannon. We are opting for the cannon. We have ruined two cheaper digitals by just taking the in the fog and rain. Between those two we could have bought this one.

  20. Dan Kaz the great on

f u… dc 1000 is way better then this… you dont know what you are talking about… idiot

  21. i got this cam (D10) its an exallent cam i have taken some exalent pic’s with it and dropped it and its still going good …any 1 know if there is a case to fit it as i diving mor than 10m now ….
