Canon Products Win Big at iF Awards for 2025

Canon recently announced that its products won at the annual iF awards for the year 2025. Canon won both design awards and a gold award.

This is the 31st consecutive year that Canon has won these awards. While the camera gear that won was interesting, it was not that surprising; what I found interesting was the semiconductor equipment winning the gold award.

Canon Semiconductor Equipment

I found this interesting because no one is talking about this new equipment from Canon, the Adastra series. I had no idea, and I’m a geek in this industry space with Canon. What’s wild about this series of equipment is the space savings.

As you can imagine, the atypical semiconductor plant, like a datacenter gets more expensive the more square footage it consumes. So, creating equipment that takes up less space means you can have more equipment for the given area.

Not only is it smaller in physical footprint, it’s also more eco-friendly by supporting a reduction of raw material and transportation energy due to weight reduction.

The design also supports circulating water to reduce the necessary water cooling by up to 55%. Overall, the Adastra (AX07) system is expected to reduce environmental impact and CO2 emissions by up to 18%.

The look reminds me of the old 1970s era of Cray Supercomputers.

The only thing missing is the Shag carpet. Cray-1 Supercomputer circa 1975

At the time, the Cray 1 was built circularly to reduce the wiring lengths, thus improving its speed – and also to increase the ability of the entire unit to dissipate heat in a smaller footprint.

Canon’s Adastra lineup is expected to handle semiconductor fabrication of memory, logic, RF filters, sensors and image sensors. Basically anything.

Canon EOS iF Awards

Oh, and about the rest of the awards? Yeah, Canon’s cameras and lenses did well, as they should, with the R1 and R5 Mark II receiving the design awards as well as the RF24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM Z and RF10-20mm F4 L IS STM lenses.

Canon Printing Technology

Canon’s industrial printing systems also made a splash, with the varioPRINT ix1700 and the varioPRESS iV7, both of which gained awards for large commercial printing.

These are pretty big, expensive, sleek and fast printers. The varioPRINT ix1700 can print 73 pages per minute for B3-sized prints. (14×20″), I think your traditional Pixma Printers can do maybe 1.5 prints.

Canon Medical

Canon’s medical division also made an impact with the Aquilion ONE INSIGHT Edition computed tomography (CT) scanner and the Aplio Me diagnostic ultrasound system, which garnered design awards. The Aquilion ONE sounds pretty cool, as it uses AI superresolution to deliver higher-quality images and AI-enabled raw data motion correction.

While we always talk about Canon cameras, we should stop and remember that there is a lot more to Canon than just cameras.

Canon’s Press Release

TOKYO, March 5, 2025—Canon Inc. announced today that 111 Canon Group product designs were recognized by iF International Forum Design GmbH with the prestigious iF Design Award 2025. This year marks Canon’s 31st consecutive year of winning the iF Design Award. Most notably, Canon’s Adastra2 series of semiconductor and electrical component manufacturing equipment was selected for the Gold Award, the top prize. Encouraged by the recognition of the company’s design excellence, Canon will continue striving to realize products that combine the highest levels of performance and design.
