The Canon RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM has been immensely popular, and in turn, quite difficult to get a hold of. Canon has updated its supply information page and you could be waiting up to 6 months from the time of order to receiving the lens.

Canon RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM

We are planning to ship them sequentially, but it is expected that it will take a considerable amount of time to deliver. When placing a new order, it may take up to half a year to deliver.

  1. You should be gratefull that Canon are willing to even sell you one for £12.5K....:ROFLMAO:
Actually, Wex Photographic have a used one for only £10500
Digital Rev can sell you one for £8500 UKP...you'll just have to go onto the long waiting list.

  2. Luckily for me I preordered the lens the day of the announcement from my local dealer and got one the day of the release. With that said, I also pre-ordered the 10-20 mm f4 lens the day of release and was #2 on the list and I am still waiting for a copy. Such as life. Being patient builds character.

I've ordered the 10-20 on the day of the announcement, but I wasn't early since I made a mistake with the order and I had to cancel and re-pre-order..
Adorama shipped my lens last friday and I received it 2 days ago (monday Nov 27)
Amazed at how small and light it is, but I still have to try it seriously (just fired a couple of random shots to verify it works) - but I can tell you already that 10mm is insane

  4. It would be pretty easy to underestimate demand for a $10,000 camera lens. They'd probably prefer a pile of unfilled orders than a pile of unsold product. At $10k per, I'm sure Canon would like to sell and ship as many of these as fast as possible. There is no good business reason to think otherwise. The window of opportunity isn’t open forever.

  5. That really shows that if you really need a specific lens, pre-order it immediately.
Not just that, but stay up the night of the expected announcement to get a jump on it. Then maybe simultaneously order from 2 or 3 places and keep whichever manages to get it to you first.

Otherwise, check your local brick and mortar shop if you're not in NYC. I lucked out and saw the 100-300mm on display at my local shop after I'd given up hope of getting it this year. Call around to other smaller city camera shops too. Though too many people are probably getting wise to this strategy so they might get snapped up right away, too.

One of the specialist photo places here in .nl requires a €50 deposit for preorders and they tend to have ‘rare’ items in stock at launch, after fulfilling preorders. That’s how I got my RF28mm after a within-the-hour pre order failed at a different store :)

New skills for a new world ;)

So far, the first part of that has been sufficient for me, without needing to resort to the second.

  8. The window of opportunity isn’t open forever.
Of course it is forever - well at least for a significant time like all Canon big whites.
The RF100-300 clearly is unique enough that some users will switch for it ie one lens/one body rather than one body/2 lenses (70-200 +300) and switch or the more expensive version with 2 bodies/one lens each. I believe the RF24-105/2.8 is in a similar situation.

The window of opportunity would be somewhat limited only when there is direct competition from another ecosystem.
