We reported in late November that we could see an EOS R5 Mark II in 2023, but that timeline has been debunked for the most part. We expect to see the next EOS R5 next year alongside the EOS R1. Most likely in the first half of 2024. We think this timeline makes far more sense.

To keep the EOS R5 viable through 2023 in the features department, Canon will release a major new feature firmware update sometime this year. We wouldn't be surprised to see the new firmware update announced for NAB 2023 in April.

While we don't have the new firmware notes, we did get some information as to what to expect. As you'll notice, these features are available in the Canon EOS R6 Mark II.

  • Possible Canon EOS R5 Updates Coming
  • Lens breathing correction
  • Pre-shooting buffer
  • Removal of 30 minutes record limit
  • Vehicle tracking AF mode (bikes, trains & planes)
  • Additional tracking for more animals

We were also told to expect a couple of “new” features for the EOS R5 which are above and beyond anything currently in the EOS R line up.

As for the Canon EOS R5 C, we weren't given specific information about that camera, but if the Canon EOS R5 gets updated, we expect that the EOS R5 C will receive feature upgrades as well.

  1. This would be very welcome, but I'm not getting my hopes up. I don't think we'll get an R6II style 'auto' option for subject detection.

One of the things I would like to see added to Canon firmwares in general is the ability to select a 3D box for limiting the AF zone. With the R3 and newer bodies we received the ability to resize the AF zones to get a 2D box, but not the ability to set focus limiters. Being able to set a 3D area would be great for monitoring perches and burrows.
  2. These features look good, I hope more to come. It seems to me that Canon is aiming to maximize sales of the R5 until the R5 Mark II arrives (next year). They will unleash the full potential of the R5 this year.
  3. This seems too good to be true… The R5 is almost perfect for me. If they would just remove the 30 minute video recording limitation (and as a bonus, also give us face-only AF), I would consider another one instead of another R5C.
  4. Excellent news. I though Canon had already abandoned the R5 updates.

For me the best will be:
    • Being able to change fps in electronic shutter mode, maybe 5, 10 and 20 fps.
    • Pre-shooting buffer
    • Additional tracking for more animals, or improve and refine the actual AF.
  5. Yes, 2024 is a more logical date for a R5ii announcement, and the R5 will benefit from a few updates, although it's already an extremely good camera.

    My wish list:

    Pre-shooting buffer.
Better subject recognition and stickier tracking for a wide variety of wild animals.
AF initiated within any AF zone, and tracked across entire frame.
    Exposure bracketing with electronic shutter.
    Reduced EVF lag from startup/standby.
  6. Hope they add focus assist in manual mode with "truly" manual lenses without electronic communication
and also, focus bracketing with mechanical shutter to be able to do hdr and flash
and finally super resolution, with sensor shifting
  7. My wishlist would be better DR in video mode, but I am pretty confident, that this wont happen with the same sensor and image processor.

Also it would be great to get an 4k60 oversampled image. the quality in 4khq is truly awesome - but I use mostly 4k60 for my work...

Btw, the last firmware upgrade was allready super crazy good - the overheat problem was completely fixed for me!

FWIW, the crop-mode 4k60 is oversampled from 5.1k. It works great for macro, but I can see that it's not a feasible option for other video work due to the 1.6x crop.

    Agree!
Focus assist ("triangles") for fully manual lenses would be a very welcome addition, and greatly facilitate focusing, easier to use than the loupe function.
  10. The removal of the 30 minute limit is wishful thinking. It's not a technical issue. It's a TAX issue.

Canon would have to reclassify from stills camera to video camera and back tax all R5 units sold ever, to be able to do this.

    It's not going to happen.

    It is an overheating issue.
The R5 should theoretically have the exact same readout speed of the R5 C which does have oversampled 4K 60.
  12. As an R5 owner who sees the R6ii has updated animal af, with same processor as R5 it was kinda disheartening the R5 may not get refreshed af as it was capable. Hopefully this firmware gives us that, if it’s as good as the R6ii I may hold onto the camera longer.
  13. The bike vehicle option for me it's mandatory. As a motorbikes photographer, in frontal shots, I was always struggling because the focus is on the helmet (people), and not on the front light/fairing, even if vehicle is selected. Sometimes the rectangle is on the whole bike, mostly on the helmet. With big telephoto lenses, this could lead to the front part of the bike to be not in focus, a nightmare.

According to Canon, the R6 II does not have the same processor as the R5.
Digic X is a family of processors.

    You mean "does not".
Correct. The Digic X is a family of processors and it was made clear during the launch of the R6 Mk II, that it has an updated version of the Digic X processor.

  16. This would be great. RAW burst mode, or some variation, is exactly the feature I would like to see .

After that, agree with others, having additional options for fps in ES would be good.
