“The already classic 300 f/2.8 IS is going to be replaced in the first quarter of 2009. Canon has upped the already great optical quality and improved the IS.”
I heard this a few months ago from a pro North American sports photographer, but he wouldn't go too indepth about it. NDA's and whatnot. I do expect all of Canon's big white lenses to get updated over the next 24 months.
Barcelona
I'll be in Barcelona, Spain for the week. Leaving tomorrow. There might be a little lag in posting, we'll see what the internet access is like.

If you look at the MTF at http://www.usa.canon.com, the image quality is extremely good compared to other L-lenses. May be, the IS is improved.
There are a lot of other lenses they should improve to be usable with open aperture and 20MP (80lines per mm at the chip?) like 50/1.4 .
I don’t see a need to upgrade this awesome lens. The 200 f/2 MIGHT just pip it in IQ, but if it does, only just.
Easily, the Canon 300 2.8 IS is one of the best lenses produced by Canon and Nikon both.
umm…whaaaa? they have a ton of other lenses that could use and overhaul to keep up with the balloning MP numbers (both the 5d MKII and the 50D)…and they go for one of their sharpest lenses first? WTF?
300 2.8IS should be one of the last lens updates in Canon’s playbook. 400 f4IS, 500 f5.6IS, 200-400 f4IS (or 100-400 f4-5.6) should all come before it on the super tele list and zoom list.
I don’t think this rumor will bear fruit anytime soon.
Wonder what the price will be like. I can imagine a huge hike that won’t make it worth it…
