Soon!
I received notice that there will be a Canon announcement on November, 24, 2009 in regards to a new 70-200 f/2.8L IS II.

No word on any other lenses being announced. Still waiting on CR3 confirmation.

  • Hopefully it means that the original model gets a price drop. Okay, I am not holding my breath because it likely wont happen.

  • If this turns out to be true, my 70-200/4L IS will be for sale very soon =) Hopefully they improve the IS and tripod collar to be more usable in real worlds.

    My 0.02

  • Well, if announced, there will be a huge used market for the current 70-200 2.8L IS.

But I also think the new one will be closer to $2800. Don’t forget the 30% price increase on existing equipment over the last year…with that in mind, new lenses should be even more than the current ones.

  • What’s wrong with the tripod collar? If you’d pay the $2300+ for an f/2.8L IS II, then why not the $1700 for the original? This is more of an upgrade for the nuts (like me) that already have the f/2.8L, wouldn’t you think?

  • I hope the new one is lighter than the current one… it’s so much heavier that Nikon’s equivalent 70-200 2.8 VR. But I guess it keeps my left arm strong.

  • The 1D4 manual indicates problem with 70-200f2.8IS when 2x extender is used (pg97? or 94). So a new 70-200 is not a big surprise.

  • Here’s hoping for HIS, possibly lighter than the current one and a very big hopefully.. 24-70 to follow with HIS :)

  • @benjamin: ??? The tripod collar of the 2.8’s is among the best there is! Rock solid here. What’s wrong with yours ?

  • oh teh hotness…

now I just need a new bank account. If it’s good and I can lug it around I can sell a few lenses. Is this goodbye to my 70-200 4 IS and 85 1.8? They could at least pay for half.

now teh nuclearness would be a concomitant 24-70 IS announcement. We’re ready Canon!

  • I hope this lens is announced and released soon. Then by the time I save enough to afford one, it might actually be available in stores (6 months later) LOL.

  • choosing from 4 different 70-200 was a hard choice especially between the f4IS and f2.8IS… what now???

if they sell this at a higher price then this would surely be a big failure… paying extra for a better IS is worthless, knowing that the current IS works great. and i doubt it will be sharper wide open. the old 70-200f2.8IS will be the reasonable choice.

  • win. haha 24-70IS, as if it wasnt heavy enough. but yea, pretty sure i would have that on my camera all the time.

  • The same day I’m taking a vacation… If it happened then I wouldn’t know until December 1st at the least

  • I think you are right that Canon will not keep 3 versions of a lens. This will replace the current 70-200 2.8 IS. I think a modest price increase will be in order. Say between 1899 and 2199. I’d actually go back on what I said earlier and wager $1999. The current stock will drop to something like 1499 and finish out its days.

  • If we assume the old 2.8 IS price falls, which I think won’t, it should also shift the prices for the F4 IS and F4. Someone correct my logic.

  • It would certainly sell more if canon offered two: one black and one white. Like the black ipod when it first came out. I was on that like black on night.

  • Not that interested. I have my old 70-200 IS. Although not as fancy as the that Nikorr one, I cannot afford to buy a new $23XX lens. Canon had better to make the new one as good as the Nikorr one.

I am only waiting for the 24-70 IS. Again, Canon has to do a good job on this one, at least as good as the Nikorr 24-70.

  • i’m hoping for a new 24-70

I wonder if this lens will have new IS that works better for VIDEO.

    That would be great.

  • Unlike the iPod, the Canon lens isn’t a fashion accessory. I doubt the lack of colour choices forces very many prospective buyers into the hands of Sigma/Tamron/Tokina, especially considering neither of their 70-200 lenses have IS.

There’s nothing wrong with such a choice, but you’re overblowing the significance of the colour of a lens.

  • Who ever thought buying Canon lenses would be a dollar play… talk about being able to ‘enjoy’ your investment. Seriously, with the dollar falling and falling and falling, how long before the foreign manufacturers are forced to open plants in the US in order to make goods we can afford?

    What goes around comes around….

  • some people dont want go out shooting and have people see a white lens and intantly start ploting a way to steal their camera

  • Given the American dollar’s plunge against most other currencies (including the Yen) over the past twelve months, you’re dreaming. No point doing volume on a product like this if there’s no profit to be had…

  • I agree. I’d rather see an improvement in image quality on that lens (it’s good already, but you can always improve stuff) and leave the IS as it is. With all the new high quality insane ISO we’re going to see in the 1D IV and most likely future releases of other camera models, IS becomes a little less important.

  • Speak for yourself, I’ll take 4-5 stop IS over the current IS anyday. Why would they ever keep the IS the same, it’s insane to “rely” on high ISO to save you all the time.

  • Isn’t the 35mm F2 even older? Would be nice to have an EF 35mm F1.8 with modern optics, but thatg would only happen after a new 35mm F1.4 with much better optics is released.

  • If they drop the current F2.8 price, it’s to clear inventory. There’s no logical reason to also drop the F4 price; they’re not trying to clear the F4s, and there’s no reason to try and balance demand between the two.

  • The dollar still has a ways to fall before US wages come into parity with much of the rest of the world. Most people think it’s getting bad because they don’t realize just how good we had it, and we got used to high pay and cheap goods.

  • If Canon charges $2800 for the lens, people will still buy it. People are buying the $6200 EF 200 2.0L IS.

Even the 35L with its new higher price is still in high demand. The 24L II is a solid $500 more than the first version.

In any case, canon will not be selling a new 70-200 for $2199. There’s no way.

  • Your pricing scheme sounds too good to be true… If the new lens is $1999 I will definitely be getting in line to order one!

  • 35L is soft at 1.4 so it can definitely be improved. It seems logical they introduce it next year with the new coating to reduce glare (since this is a great night lens). Also more metal and less plastic.

My copy of the 70-200 2.8L on my 5D2 is sooooo sharp, I doubt they could improve on that, but more IS is always helpful.

I like the heft on a 24-70m 2.8L and I like the size hood. One change would be to make the lens fixed in length so which I think would give it better sealing — and add IS of course.

Expect $ (nominal) prices to go up as the US Govt continues to print paper money at will. Tied to gold money canon is probably reducing their (real) prices as technology has been improving. That’s cause the govt can’t counterfeit gold but it can print that paper stuff away.

  • MTf from canon tell us, that the lens can really be improved at the wide angle side. The lens is rally sharp at the long end.

  • Hmm..

Just to mention it, in Norway the 2.8 IS costs $2.839.. the 2.8 IS II is said to cost us around $3.533..

.. so I’d pay $2.300 for the new one :)

  • I suspect a lot of US consumer pricing is quite artificial as well. For example the Pontiac G8 was cheaper in the US than in its country of manufacture.

It wouldn’t surprise me if this culture (assuming it’s not an isolated example) had something to do with the trouble you guys are in at the moment.

  • Oh John Swan, how you deeply amuse us all! I miss the out of control swan posts of yesteryear. Well, sort of.

  • Swan is banned I believe.

    But Beautiful Bobby is not.

This will be my next lens, without a doubt. I will be the first on here with it.

  • Pricing of $2,000 would be ideal. Any more than that and there will surely be grumbles, although demand will still be huge. But perhaps we will see less questions of “what do I buy, f/2.8 or f/4, as there will be a far bigger gulf in price.

  • Half stop bigger would be huuuge in a number of ways: further lens differentiation (2.8IS sticks around), might be heavier, although they could probably keep it a similar heft by using more plastics, and think of the low light, DOF help. Question is, can they make it tack sharp corner to corner at 2.8?

This begs the question: could a 24-70 2.4 IS be in the cards too?

  • 24-70/2.8 L IS is a reality. saw one being tseted over the weekend wth an unmarked body of te 1 series dimensions at a botanical garden. the guy mentioned it had 27 MP and 1080p /60F video udma6 card required per data thruput was using extreme pro/90 card none of his lexars could keep up. He said it was sharper and faster than origional and $1699.

  • They were fun. My ISP is still banned though for some reason (longest 24 hour ban I’ve ever had). Lucky free proxy things will get around it. CR guy needs to fix it up though.

  • Trust me guys, those messages did not come from John Swan. I know John Swan VERY well. ;-)

  • You just keep talking nonsense to yourself Justin, while I am taking pin sharp photos, courtesy of my wide collection of L lenses.

  • Hi all,

from my point of view, I can say that a new 70-200 2.8L II is confirmed.

Yesterday I was in a CPS presentation for the “new” Canon 1D IV and in one of the slides where they talk about lenses compatibility with the camera, you could see both lenses listed there (actual 70-200 2.8 and new version II).

    Hope that helps.

    Saludos.

  • Not forgetting that running a high ISO can also mean that backgrounds become exposed where you may prefer that they weren’t.

    I am very eager for a 24-70mm f/2.8L IS and a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II now please. My little 50mm f/1.8 is limited ;o)

  • Well, its near the end of this year, nothing about an upgrade to the 70-200 F2.8 L USM IS.

I think I will buy the “old” one next week :)
serious, I have the money, and I think it is still a wise investment.
