New highend kit zoom coming?
I'm told we could see a replacement of the EF-S 17-85 IS lens as soon as February. The new lens would be slightly longer at the telephoto end and build quality reduced to lower the price. It will run concurrent with the 17-85 until stock is gone, possibly Christmas 2009.

The source says EF-S 17-90 f/4-5.6 IS.

  1. I really doubt that Canon would do this. The EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is only 3 years old. It was designed to give APS-C sensor bodies the equivalent of Canon’s highly successful EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. The build quality of this lens is very good and it already includes the latest IS technology as well as an aspherical lens element which is generally found in much more expensive lenses. The lens is highly regarded in the community as one of Canon’s best APS-C walk-around lenses.

One final note. I believe Canon will be looking to improve their entire EF lens line, now that they are selling much higher resolution cameras like the 50D and 5DMKII.

  2. I think Canon would need to update there 28-200 lens first, i.e put an Image stabilizer on it. I hope they do. Also the 24-70 needs updating, if they could make it a 20-70 IS that would be amazing!!

  3. +1 20-70 IS… as long as the IQ is there… that would be the ultimate walk-around for FF… I’d pinch my pennies for that for sure (even if its 2k)

    lol.

To start, the lens isn’t highly regarded; any acclaim it gets is the result of the lens’ decent IS and optical range. From an IQ standpoint the lens is extremely AVERAGE.

They just came out with a 18-200 IS. I highly doubt that they would make a 28-200 again.
