The forum will be moving to a new domain in the near future (canonrumorsforum.com). I have turned off "read-only", but I will only leave the two forum nodes you see active for the time being.

I don't know at this time how quickly the change will happen, but that will move at a good pace I am sure.

Sigma formally announces the Sigma 200mm f/2 DG OS Sports

Ah, thanks. I didn't expect that anyone offers a 2mm thin adapter ring...
It works, but understandably there are limits to how fast it can translate AF commands back and forth. 15fps with tracking AF is no problem. The further beyond that you go the higher the miss rate gets.

If Canon ever opens RF (never going to happen...) it might finally push Sony to increase or remove the 15fps limit. Until then (and again, it's never...) it will probably stay.

Sigma formally announces the Sigma 200mm f/2 DG OS Sports

Sigma has gotten a lot of attention lately and folks are raving about all their new lenses, so I kind of figured I´ll just take a look at what L-mount set up would look like for me. Honestly, at first I thought I might be tempted, but in the end I am not intrigued at all. There would be absolutely no equivalent for my RF 100-500mm (Sigma 150-600mm comes close, but AF is not as good plus it weighs 2.1 KG) and my RF 14-35mm F4 (my two favorite lenses) and even 70-200mm F4 doesn't seem to have an equal competitor.

Why look at L and not E? On E there is the Tamron 150-500mm F/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD which includes incredibly fast magnetic linear drive motors and is an extremely well regarded lens. It's slightly heavier than the Canon but is half the price. Or, you could go with the also superb Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD which is smaller and lighter, and starts much wider. Also optically superb. The Sony 100-400GM lens is very much due for a v2, probably sometime in the next 6 months or so. Quite possible that it will become a 100-500 but so far few rumors.

On the ultra-wide side of things there are various options. The Sony 12-24/4G or 12-14/2.8GM. The Sony 16-35/4G and 16-25/2.8G are also both good. Or the Sigma 14-24/2.8 or Tamron 16-30/2.8. The recent Samyang 14-24/2.8 has gotten good reviews too. No, none of these quite match your 14-35/4L but many are a full stop faster.

For the 70-200/4, the fairly new Sony 70-200/4Gii is an incredible lens. Not only is it superb optically as a telephoto but it does 1:2 macro across the entire zoom range, and does it well. It uses Sony's blindingly fast magnetic linear drive motors, and it's fully compatible with 1.4x and 2x TCs.

If primes are of interest, the 14/1.8GM is staggeringly good and only $1700. The 16/1.8G is a great lower cost alternative. The 20/1.8G is incredible. So many options both Sony and 3rd party. Too many to list, really.

Canon RF 300-600mm f/5.6L IS USM, Here We Go Again

Sony 200-600/f5-6.3 G is 1/3 stop slower on the long end but sells for $2100.

So... How "well below $10k" is going to be "well below"? $8k? $7k? With the price estimate being anchored to $10k, surely it's not going to be $6k, $5k, or less. Psychologically for many there's a big difference between f5.6 and f6.3 from DSLR days when going beyond f5.6 could have a serious impact on AF. These days with mirrorless there is almost no difference.

Why can't Canon make a 200-600 that actually performs as well as the Sony G? What happens when Sony eventually brings out the 200-600v2 with even better optics and their full magnetic linear drive AF motors, but it still sits below $2.5k? Because that lens is definitely coming.

Show your Bird Portraits

Finally something different and by far more interesting: Oahu Elepaio (immature but with them it's kinda tricky)! My last encounters with this bird were January 2023 and February 2022 (single birds) - and nothing before.
Endemic for Oahu (Kauai and Big Island have their own species of Elepaio, nowhere else in the world, belongs to the Monarch flycatchers!). The last photo is to illustrate how you so many times you will see them (if lucky!). The bottom line is: I'm pretty happy right now:p!

Sigma formally announces the Sigma 200mm f/2 DG OS Sports

But it's not the most reliable, new firmware from Nikon might brick the adapter....
Nikon seems to have gone out of the way not brick third party stuff. The Z8 3.00 firmware seemed to have made a lot of 3P lenses not work properly, and they released 3.01 as a bug fix pretty quickly.

Nikon announces the Nikkor Z 24-70mm F2.8 S II

The question is - will it be with or without VR?
Apparently both Sony and Nikon feel weight is more important than VR on a short focal length zoom given the prevalence of IBIS systems.

Current LensVRWeight
Canon RF 24-70/2.8 LYes900g
Sony FE 24-70/2.8 GM IINo695g
Nikkor 24-70/2.8 S-Line IINo675g

Canon RF 300-600mm f/5.6L IS USM, Here We Go Again

If this zooms hit with these specs the market, and if it really is an L lens, dial me in. I would immediately upgrade my RF 200-800mm with it as a lighter combo when I don't want to carry my heavier 600mm prime. My main reason to replace the RF 200-800mm is its obvious fragility that prevents me to take it with me in more rugged environments, otherwise I still like this compact zoom.
Same here. I would trade-in my 200-800 mm for the 300-600 mm f5.6 L lens as well.

Canon RF 300-600mm f/5.6L IS USM, Here We Go Again

Nikon announces the Nikkor Z 24-70mm F2.8 S II

I wouldn't be shocked to see a v2 from Canon in the next little while. ;)
I´d like to see Canon release a mkii of the 24-70mm F2.8, 15-35mm F2.8 and 28-70mm F2. All three have to lose weight in order to look sexy again :)
Of course, Nikons mkii did more than that and it really looks like a great upgrade.

Ahh, and Canon, if you're reading this: 24-105mm F4 L could benefit from a mkii as well or even more (focal length).

Canon RF 300-600mm f/5.6L IS USM, Here We Go Again

It was at the join. I did not see the lens but the bend was sufficient to cause major sharpness issues.
I wonder if, for Euro 900+, Canon will replace the high quality polymer -aka plastic- flange with an improved metal version.
Because, if this incident occurs a second time, cumulated costs of repairs will exceed the value of the lens...(grey market price is currently Euro 1750).
Without a guarantee it won't happen a third time...
