I like your thinking. Leave specialist video to the C300, high-end video to the 1DX, and the new 5DIII can focus less on video and more on still image quality.

Given that the generally-agreed subject matter for the 5D tends to be slower-moving than the 7D, I can guess that Canon would be willing to make that tradeoff - as you said, they already have done that for the 1DX.

Hmmm what if Canon merged the 5DII with the 7D into an entry-level FF line to sit below the X, but using the new sensor? Call it (say) the 8D. Maybe drop the DIGICIV to lower the FPS and AF performance to keep it below the X. Then the xxD line would resume from where the 7D came in...
