BIRD IN FLIGHT ONLY -- share your BIF photos here

Head seems small for a Peregrine and the underpart streaks are not vertical. Something else, maybe?

    Here are the RF 600mm f/11 & RF 800mm f/11 super-telephoto lenses

The 800mm would be a good lens for those far-away shorebirds on bright sunny days. Makes RF bodies just that more enticing. Smart move on Canon's part!

An RF super telephoto zoom on the way, likely in late 2020 [CR1]

Just thinking how I paid nearly the full price on Think Tank Airport International a few years ago, ouch.

We were wrong, all of your Canon mirrorless dreams are likely coming true soon

"We were wrong, all your Mirrorless are belong to us [Canon]"? ;)

This is what we know Canon will be announcing for Photokina

I can see lots of birders, especially the more mobile type, going with a lighter, moderately long lens. Performance with extenders remains to be seen, though.

    LensCoat and Canon 400mm f5.6

I use these for my 100-400 II, as well. They do ship globally (to Taiwan in my case).

More Mentions of a Canon Mirrorless Announcement Ahead of Photokina [CR1]

    Let her know Nikon's coming out with a DO-type 500 f/5.6, and the 400 should cost a lot less. ;) https://www.canonrumors.com/industry-news-nikon-announces-development-of-af-s-nikkor-500mm-f-5-6e-pf-ed-vr/

BIRD IN FLIGHT ONLY -- share your BIF photos here

My first impression was of a Gray Heron but something just didn't look right (the beak and shape of the dark cap). I looked up herons of Suriname. Sure enough, there's a close cousin called Cocoi Heron. Apparently GBH, GH, and CH constitute a superspecies. PS: for comparison here's a GH I shot...

Hey, Wiebe, Your Golden Pheasant (native to China, I believe) is definitely related to the Gray Francolin. According to Wikipedia, they both belong to the Phasianidae family, which includes pheasants, partridges, junglefowl, chickens, Old World quail, and peafowl. --- Jack, I totally enjoyed...

Another Mention of a Canon Non-L Telephoto Zoom [CR2]

Jack, My vote is for either a Le Conte's or a Nelson's Sparrow. Both occur in Western Canada. Another, very similar candidate is Saltmarsh Sparrow, but seems this guy is East Coast (American). From the photos you show I can't tell which one. This is my 5 minutes' reading of National...

Canon Continues to Develop Supertelephoto Zoom

I can live with 200-500 f/5.6 with excellent AF. It'd stop me lusting after Nikon's offer (+D500). As much as I love my 100-400 II with its snappy AF, it can be a bit short for some birds.

It's a weaver. Was going to say Village Weaver but the head isn't black. So I did a bit of googling, maybe Rüppell's weaver, or related. Seems there are lots of weaver species.

Tamron to Announce 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2

Not sure if this has been posted -- digitalrev has done a hands-on review: http://www.digitalrev.com/article/tamron-sp-150-600mm-f-5-6-3-di-vc-usd-g2-review

Lenses that you want Canon to release next

I can afford a Big White but a lighter, cheaper, hopefully more mobile 400-600 mm f5.6-6.3 IS would suit my current birding needs. Alternatively I will also take a 200-500 mm f5.6 IS with better AF than Tammy or Sigma.

Sachtler FSB-8T Fluid Head-has anybody use them for long telephoto

Sachtler is standard gear for serious bird photographers in my country (Taiwan). I have NEVER seen a gimbal in action in the two years I've been shooting birds, though I do have a Wimberley.

    Superzoom Development Mentioned Again [CR2]

From what I've seen it crops relatively well, in experienced hands (i.e. good stabilization): Original: https://flic.kr/p/ycdGEA Cropped: https://flic.kr/p/z9fobi It's funny to see a few local photographers with 600 and 800mm Nikkon "Super Blacks" dabbling with the 200-500mm zoom. Must be...
