6D or 5DMK3 for Astrophotography.... thoughts?

Hey guys, I have a two part question I've been doing a ton of research but can't seem to make up my mind. I currently use a Canon 60D with the 10-20mm sigma for Astrophotography and it does pretty moderately alright for star shots.

Im looking at upgrading my body and a lens to something a little more serious for what I want to be able to continue doing. So far I have found the Canon 6D and the 11-16mm tokina (open to other reccomendations, I've seen many Rokinon lens' that will do the same trick) as a new combination for some wide angle astrophotography. What are your thoughts?

Canon 60D body
18-55mm Canon
10-20mm Sigma
70-300mm Sigma DG Macro Telephoto
50mm Canon f/1.8

Does anyone know of a site where I could get appraised, if not a general value that I should be looking at? All products are spotless, have always had filters on them and no scratches on the lens or bodies.

Take a look at completed listings/sold items on ebay to figure out the value of your items. Then you can list them on eBay, Craigslist, fred Miranda, or any other sight you feel comfortable selling on. Alternately you can sell your gear to BH or Adorama, though I image they will enjoy a large chunk of the value of the items.

6D and a selection of the Korean manual lenses (Samyang/Rokinon/Bower) would be a good upgrade from your current kit *for astro*.

Skip the zoom. The 5D3 performance (non-sensor) is unnecessary in that application, and people claim the 6D is slightly better in low light anyway.

However, if you *actually* really want to use your set-up for general daylight use, then the 5D3 is better unless you never take action or quasi-action shots. As long as you are ok with the extra cost too. Then also the zoom may be more practical if you need to keep the overall cost controlled.

Disclosure: I have a full spectrum conversion 5D2 with Korean manual lenses for astro. I have a 5D3 for general use (and occasional bright astro like comets, etc.). I'm pretty hardcore at this though, so that degree of specialism may not be for everyone.

The Tokina 11-16mm is an aps-c lens. Get a Rokinon/Samyang/Bower instead.

14mm 2.8 UWA would be a safe bet as its very wide already. The 24mm 1.4 may not be wide enough for the entire bulge, so you'll have to stitch a panorama.
And now, you may or may not need a nodal rail/mount to avoid parallax problems with close foreground objects in your scene.

+1 Very good observations siegsAR, I was thinking about the same. Rokinon/Samyang 14mm has better coma for stars trails than many Canon L lenses. That's why this cheap lens is in many Canon users' bags.
As others have said, you can sell all your lenses on eBay, Amazon, etc.

I wont always be shooting night, but I find that I'm always out 95% of the time during the night... thanks for the heads up, I assume the camera will perform fine in any other aspect however.

Amazing what he is doing right now.

I shoot with the 6D too and am using the 17-40L and the kit 24-105L. Still getting results, but not fast enough.

I'll be adding the 14mm Samyang in the next couple of months without a doubt.

Hello, i have already the Eos 6D and a 24mm 1.4 L II. My plan is to upgrade the 24mm even with a wider 14mm Korean lens or the 16-35 4.0 L to get such stunning night shots. My question, is the 14mm such sharp as my 24mm L?

Maybe the 16-35 4.0 L? Or is the aperture to low for such shots? Sorry for my horrible English. :-[
