On March 11, 2001 (the six month anniversary of 9/11) two beams of light representing the fallen World Trade Center towers was illuminated for the first time in New York City. Since then, every September 11th the "Tribute in Light" shines from sunset to sunrise the next morning.
This year I was granted permission to photograph from the roof of the 6-floor parking garage where the memorial is generated. I left work at 2:30 on Friday, had dinner at a popular diner only a block from Ground Zero, photographing by dusk, and was allowed onto the roof at 10pm.
88 Xenon light fixtures, 7000 watts drawing 265amps at 28VDC each. The white specs in the beams are bugs, moths, seagulls and migrating songbirds. Multiple times I went inside the squares, it was incredibly peaceful and soothing laying on my back looking up inside the beam at the heavens.
The photos linked above are mine, taken from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Jersey City, Hoboken, and Staten Island; from this year and three years prior.
Please feel free to share this link with everyone - we should never forget!
