Is it the IS version? Optically, they are both excellent, I like to handhold my camera, even for most close focus shots, so the IS on my 100L is nice for that. If you are using a tripod, IS is unnecessary.

Yes, I try to use as high of a shutter speed as possible. A wide open aperture makes it easy, but if I need real depth of field, then at f/16 it gets tougher.
