Canon can you make a camera for photographers and not videographers?

Ever since the 5D Mk. II was released, hybrid shooting and shooters are the new reality.

Many photographers (though perhaps not you, yourself) are asked to take both stills and video, or even freelance in both photography and videography separately, like I do, using the same gear for each. I know this is not relevant to you, because as you've said in many threads, you shoot alongside professional video guys and their $250,000 broadcast lenses, but because video from the 1DX Mk. II is good enough for many smaller clients, having video features in the 1D line gives the cameras more value for those of us who shoot both photos and video.

Mostly, I sense your main worry is that Canon is compromising on photo features in order to allow the 1D series to shoot video. I don't think this is true, but if you can show me some evidence, I will happily review it.

My understanding is that the sensor in the 1DX Mark II is based on Cinema Cam technology which is why it reads out 4 times faster than the 5D Mark IV's 30 MP sensor. That 30MP stills sensor in the 5D4/R is never going to work in a 1DX Mark III. It's just to slow.

I understand what you want I just don't think Canon can deliver it. Even the 6 K Sensor in the new C300 would only be 24MP. Canon is rumored to have 8K/32mp sensors in development but I doubt the first place you'll see it is in a IDX3.

The point is, don't blame video because it's video sensor development that is going to make high MP high FPS posible.

Canon reads this forum and listens to individual photographers on a rant. Not.

Canon doesn't market to what is in the most demand based on market research. Yes they do.

Don't like video features? Then just don't turn them on. Don't use them. Simple. Besides, if you are as big time show as you claim, what's a few extra bucks?

The more I read this stuff the more respect I have for the many professionals living hand to mouth on a $30k (or less) per year paycheck after expenses. At least they know the meaning of thankfulness and humility when something good comes their way. Not bitter.

This rant is no different than your last. Somebody is scared.

BTW: I parked next to a $1,000,000 motor home yesterday. Just wrote a rant on a Hyundai forum because that gives me more clout. How you standing next to a $250,000 broadcast lens means anything at all is a mystery. It ain't yours. Neither is the stadium or the team. Nobody here cares what anyone else does for a living. Unimpressed. Then stop talking about the $30K people who should be doing something else for a living or supplementing their income with other forms of photography. They are obviously not standing next to me or my employees when we work.

If you knew what you were doing you wouldn't need to crop so much. Sarcasm. #Not_a_pro (More sarcasm)

Did you really write that? Even with sarcasm? Know what I'm doing? Cropping?

No rant... It's how I make a living and I pay my people if someone makes $30K a year as a professional sports photographer they make less than half of what I pay my photo assistant who has a college degree, internships during school and 2 years of photography experience. I pay them benefits, vacations, a 401K w/match, tuition for training, transit reimbursement, well-paid overtime, a great work environment and the ability to travel. They also earn bonuses and commissions for new clients they bring in. The people you talk about making 30K don't know the business.

How do you respect someone who works an entire year as a professional sports photographer and makes $30K? Do they not have enough sense to supplement their income with other genres of photography? What is the quality of their work? What is their business acumen within the sports and ancillary industries that also utilize the media.

Let me help you as to where my sports photography business income comes from, aside from what I do as a private "portrait photographer" for athletes. I worked hard to get where I am and build a business.

I started with nothing but a camera I took out a loan to buy to qualify as an intern in a photo studio where I swept floors, cleaned up chemicals, made appointments, served food and changed/hung lights for almost a year before I was allowed to take my first studio set.

I'm no way "The best" nor "The wealthiest" of my peers with ten employees HOWEVER It would be a shame to pay one of my employees 30K a year as a living wage as a talented photographer or photo assistant.

I build a "smart" "profitable business" based on my sports and advertising agency connections. If YOU work full-time 365 days a year as a photographer and earn 30K a year.... Pick a different profession.

My needs for me, my employees and my clients listed above would be enhanced if Canon would make the 1DXMKIII shoot at 15fps RAW, with an OVF, closer to 30MP's. This would justify me buying multiple copies for my business. We currently have four copies of the MKII, we had 5 and opted not to replace it hoping we could get 6 MKIII's in anticipation of Japan and having enough copies and CPS as a backup in Tokyo for The Games.

But what do I know??????

  1. 15fps RAW
  2. OVF,
  3. Close to 30MP's with discernable better IQ than the MKII
  4. Cross-points across the OVF not limited to center 64,
  5. Single-point expanded refined,
  6. Shooting Cases refined with less redundancy and well lit OVF verification of focus points in AI SERVO
  7. Two Media Slots with the same media in both
  8. Wi-Fi
  9. Auto MA for BIG Whites
  10. Auto Multi-Point AWB - Pentax and Hasselblad as a reference
  11. Bracketing Ability of lighting from Eval to Single Point to Center
  12. Internal Radio Control of Multiple Canon Flashes starting with 600 series and going forward
  13. Better sealing for water
  14. Better applications of paint in the areas we touch every day. All our copies have worn in the exact same areas
  15. Use better glue for body grip covers
  16. Screws, Hinges, Connectors, Springs, Plates with a higher amount of Molybdenum. 72% of the "Planet Earth" is covered in water
  17. A Base Zero - Macro Recording Function Associated With Each Lens. When we switch from an f/2.8 400mm to an f/4 200-400 it would be nice to be able to shoot on the fly. On the sidelines, it's hard to walk with more than 2 bodies with 400mm+ lenses when they are big whites like the 200-400 600 and 800mm's. If we carry a 3rd lens over our shoulder it would be nice if it reverted to our base desired settings for each venue. (Just a Wish List Item)
  18. Menu Button that allows for multiple pushes to take you directly the various colored menus.
  19. Refined focus point verification. Too many times it's not accurate and it was an ancillary focus point that was actually used. There must be a way to refine this.
  20. Better refinement of color profiles and or sensor variations. Every 1DXMKII we have has unique color variance subtle as they might be. Tightening up these tolerances in the red, magenta and blue areas of concern would be amazing.
  21. Wish List - Plug & Play Workflow Color Your Approved Monitor, Approved PC & Video Card, Canon Camera, Approved Color Profile Hardware and Canon DPP all calibrate to "Canon Professional Color Calibration & Workflow. A partial example would be Hasselblad Natural Color Solution (HNCS).
If we just get 1-8, the copies will be well worth the $7,000 to $8,000 budget we allocated for the 5-6 copies

If any word deserves a "Canon Rumors word of 2019" award it would be pro / professional. People can shoot with a 1 series body professionally, they can do it with a Rebel as well ,as long as they are getting paid to do it. That applies to images as and video, and it's only just one definition of the term. But since there are others, it's a word that you apparently just slap around to your liking, independent if you are Canon or a CR Forum poster.

We'll, Sony went with 24 MP 20 FPS for their 1D competitor, so you don't have to fear much from them ;)

SONY Yesterday's Technology... SONY Yesterday's Specs... SONY Yesterday's Standards... The CANON 1DXMKIII is "tomorrows technology" and is scheduled for 2020 release. The Canon Camera is not based on SONY's OLD TECHNOLOGY.

Agreed.

a true professional uses the right tool for the job and budget. There is no such thing as a professional camera.

Really? Are you sure? Would you bet your life on it? So tell me you're the guy who walks around with a

Canon EOS C700 for fun???? Where do you come up with a statement that there is no such thing as a professional camera?

I suppose now you'll tell me that your walk around still camera is an H6D-400c???

No such thing as professional cameras? You're joking, right? Please tell us you don't really believe this!

Please also list each mirrorless platform on the market today that can capture stills at 30MP's or above

perhaps you should upgrade to the M6 II :)

seriously though, look at it. This gives you a good clue as to what is coming or possible with the latest round of technology, and it comes with a 30FPS burst rate! Now iimagine what a 1 series camera with dual (or quad!) processors will do. As things are evolving, computing power is becoming the most important aspect of new cameras and when you are dealing with tiny bodies then heat and battery life become nasty design bottlenecks.... a problem that 1 series cameras do not share.

The Mark IV does not have the buffers/media or PCB's proposed in the MKIII. However, you make a GREAT point that 24MP's should be the bare minimum based on the fact that the Mark 1V was released to the public in September of 2016 and went into production in March of 2016 based on a November of 2015 commitment for production. You are referencing a camera that has it's roots going back to 2015.

The Canon EOS 1DX MKIII is being released in 2020 as Canon's Flagship to coincide with the Olympic Games. I really hope that Canon is not setting a standard behind a camera with a commitment for production in 2015 and 2016 release. If that's the standard. Canon is doomed as that's a very low bar. But that's 24MB's :)

While i do agree with you to a point I dont get how they are forcing you to switch horses. Given what you want there is no other horse to switch to is there? Simple fact is we have to accept that the wannabe videographers are demanding things that us wannabe(in my case not yours) photographers have no need for but end up having to pay for

I agree with you 100%. I've been with Canon forever... However, I started with Nikon and did switch horses to Canon. I will stay with or switch to what puts food on the table.

Perhaps you misunderstood that I was referring to consumer cameras. I did not think that I had to state that, as we were discussing a consumer camera. My bad, I will go back and edit my post.

The vast bulk of Canon sales, up to the 1 series cameras are bought by amateurs. The long Big Whites are mostly bought by birders.... gopros get used by Hollywood and F1 teams.... we have a trio of Oly tough cameras that do a job that no DSLR would survive.... The lines are so blurred as not exist at this level! A pro uses the best tool for the job and budget.

Between the A9 II and 1DX III release there is less than half a year. Sony does release bodies more frequently, but you seemed to fear that they are very close to offering something that outperforms the 1DX III and I very much doubt that, as they just released their competitive model.

You seem like you enjoy raging about and worrying about stuff, but I wouldn't mind if you could tone it down a little for the sake of other readers and yourself.

I'm fine you take care of yourself and watch for SONY to try and trump the 1DX MKIII during the Tokyo Olympics. Hasselblad and SONY share more than you think..... Canon can do this if they don't dumb down the MKIII to push their mirrorless products. It's Canon's game to lose now.

Sony are not going to release another A9 before the tokyo Olympics. What you see is what they will have. And it will be outperformed by the 1dx3. If the rumoured specs are right then it will outperform the sony by a large margin.

In my experience, rubbing shoulders with photojournalists, none of them would have the time to get worked up about ridiculous little points in the specs. The ones I've known for over 30 years are truly brand agnostic. They have dedicated their careers to getting the shot, not to a camera company!

Having video features in the 5D or 1D series has held nobody back. Arguably the added video features have added little to the price of the bodies, as camera companies can sell more units with the extra marketing points. If photojournalists can't get great shots with current dSLR's and mirrorless, you name the brand, then they simply aren't photojournalists. They are self-deluded hobbyists or, worse, ineffectual "influencers."

Furthermore, a good case can be made that still photography is becoming so rare in journalism as to make a dedicated camera something few freelancers or companies would buy. Print is almost dead, and while the Web is saturated with images, having video as part of stories seems to be a requirement. So why wouldn't a professional photographer of any sort not want the option to capture some high quality, brief video-clips with ONE camera?!?
Journalism? I cant speak for them. Sports and Fashion and both have more demanding needs than PJ's. Those I know at the NYT and LAT could care less about DR or IQ beyond the shot being in focus and void of too much noise. No SI centerfolds for these lads ;)

How about a Camera for photographers and not videographers?

How about 30MP's staying at 15fps RAW. No sport in the world requires more than 15fps if you know what you're shooting. Nor do BIF or Journalists. Who in this WORLD needs 20fps? If you NEED that buy a movie camera. FACT!!!

We want increased IQ. That's all.

If I want 20fps I'l buy a Frig'n movie camera.

I want my OVF shooting 15fps RAW at 30MP. I'll pay up to $8,000 for that body and another $8,000 for my back-up. The 30MP's will allow the 1DXMKIII to be more well suited for diverse demanding shooting environments. Just because we're sports photographers, Journalists and BIF enthusiasts does not mean we don't want great resolution and IQ. The ability to crop with our prime BIG WHITES we've paid you a fortune for would be nice. It would put out a 30 to 40% better product for the public, our editors and the agencies that pay us for crisp clear shots. 20MP is very 1990's based on today's technology.

SONY and NIKON can do it and even cell phones are so far beyond what I've seen so far in the "Proposed" "Still Photography" capabilities of the MKIII.

It has to have cross-points across my OVF. Straighten up the "Cases" in the User Interface, they are redundant and counter-intuitive. In single-point expanded you need to tighten up the focus so greater weight is placed on the center focal point. Remeber mostly sports shooters are using this in AI-SERVO why does it flop around like a dead bird??? ;) We ALL say the same thing on the sidelines.

Scrap the Movie, Motion Picture GARBAGE. If I want a movie camera I'll buy one that is substantially better than the MKIII at a fraction of the cost.

Canon!!!! I'm a photographer who makes a living taking still pictures. I'm not a videographer. Can you concentrate on photography? Remember us? We're the professional photographers who support CPS, Display our BIG WHITES globally as we shoot sports. We shoot next to your $250,000 broadcast lenses.

If the 1DXMKIII is not for professional photographers vs. videographers PLEASE STOP marketing the product for "professional photographers". We don't shoot High School Sports. If the 1DXMKIII is for amateurs then 20MP - 24MP will suit them fine. it's going to be 2020 and you can't give us 30MP's at 15fps with our OVF? You worked out the kinks with a recall or "Service Advisory" on the 1DX and refined the issues with the Mirror Box with the MKII. Have you devoted so much to videography that you forgot about us "photographers"/

We don't compete with our videography peers as sports photographers or journalists. We don't produce like them or edit like them or deliver like them. Our workflow is apples to oranges. We're professionals not amateurs and still photography for professionals is different than video for professionals. You state the 1DXMKII is for professionals. I don't know a single professional sports videographer for the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, Olympics, MLS or the agencies that shows up with an MKII to shoot or broadcast video for games or tether to a truck, uplink to NOC or TOC. I know because I work on those floors and our broadcast people don't do what I do and I don't do what they do.

It seems like those of us who have dedicated our careers to Canon; fought for budgets for Canon and accumulated full kits are getting shoved to the side of the road for videography.

Try hand holding a f/2.8 300 or 400 on the sidelines using an LCD to follow the action. Impossible!! Now try doing it in sunlight... DOUBLE IMPOSSIBLE.

Canon you need to put out a 30MP, 15fps RAW Camera for stills with the MKIII or your crown will lost. SONY and Nikon are ready to see you stumble and they HOPE you do.

I would prefer to stay with Canon but if those with other equipment have an advantage over me to put food on the table.... YOU are forcing us to switch horses.
This is still relevant today, even for non professionals...it appears whether true or not that the traditional camera is being compromised for video functionality.....can understand trying to support both forms but like you if I want to do video then I will look at a video camera and not a stills
