I'm really impressed with the new lens. I have the original and was wondering if the upgrade was really worth and I've decided it is for me. Here's a very heavily cropped image taken with a 1.4X extender wide open (560mm F/8) with a 5D Mark III.

One of my early images with the new 100-400 on my 5D III. Lot's more where it came from but wanted to share at least one.

This Red-tailed Hawk was on a fresh kill and allowed me to get to within about 30 feet of it without showing any agitation. This is still close to a 100% crop. I framed the original image to include some environment as well as it's meal of Eastern Grey Squirrel.

ISO800, f/5.6, 1/250 shutter speed, 271mm.....

Very nice. Not sure how you got so close. Great shot and a great lens. I can't get over the detail in the feathers on the shots I have taken so far. Glad I made the investment.

Just for a quick comparison, I took a approx. 600mm equiv shot with my Canon SX50 today. There was snow on the tower, so contrast is poor. I could not set the lens to a longer focal length, the IS was not up to it. I'm thinking it has a issue, but I need to try it more. I just got it as a refurb 2 days ago.

The results were a bit disappointing, I expected better. I have no intention of using the camera with a tripod. Its at ISO 160, 1/500 sec.

This site has been a daily read for me, and the forum has been very useful in researching gear, so I thought I'd give back and share a gallery I put together of shots from the 100-400mm Mk II.

I had the Mk I for 4-5 years and I loved that lens. I got a lot of really nice photos with it. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it was soft at anything wider than f/8. I tried 3 copies and they were all the same.

I sold the Mk I a few months ago in anticipation of the Mk II being announced. I was hanging out for the TDP review before pulling the trigger on this lens, but a 10% off Boxing Day sale sealed the deal for me.

I'm really happy with this lens. The AF is fast, even with the 1.4x extender on, and the sharpness wide open is impressive. Certainly night and day when compared to the Mk I IMO.

You are all killing me. This lens is the next range of FL's I don't have and compliments the quality of all my other Canon zooms (16-35 f/4L & 70-200 2.8L Mk2) Pass the Tums.

Finally got out for some shooting.

We traveled to warmer climes (Arizona) for a few days and the birds were good.
I was privileged to photograph a leucistic female Gambel's Quail, male Anna's Hummingbird, and a Verdin along with a desert Jack Rabbit.
All were shot using Auto-ISO, Canon 7D MK II, Canon 100-400 II, Canon 1.4X TC II, 1/1000 @ f/8 (wide open) ISO varied between 800 and 4000. Focal length was mostly 560mm.
The last shot of the two Quail is unsharpened.

I was trying out this lens with the 2x III extender attached. The conditions were horrible as it was heavily overcast and later started to rain. Got this shot handheld with with manual focus at ISO 2500, 800mm, f/11, 1/320sec. The result rather surprised me to see the lens do as well as it did.

Will take more shots tomorrow once the light gets better. I'm sure I will be able to extract more detail at lower ISO.

Edit: Forgot to mention that this is a heavy crop out of the center - this is the Crimson Sunbird which is extremely small and was quite some distance away.

I just had a look at TDP crops of the new 100-400 and nearly fell off my chair ! The lens even stands up against the hallowed 70-200 2.8 II. 200 at f2.8 for a tight portrait or 300 at f5 ? Or 400 at f5.6 ? Looks like this is one expensive lens that I'll be forking out for.

Yes, it definitely holds its own against the 70-200 series (I have the f.4 IS). The other day, I was reviewing a few shots, and thought a couple were the 70-200, but turned out it was the 100-400. Surprised me a bit -- as I was out in a prairie and changed lenses several times during the shoot. The V.2 is really beginning to impress me the more i get out there with it. Am heading back out Sunday and Monday to check it with the 1.4x (don't own a 2x)...

This is one superb lens. The IQ between the 70-200 II and the 100-400 II is indistinguishable (except that the 70-200 can go f/2.8 of course)
