Here's a couple of hummingbird shots with this lens and 5D3:

What iso did you use? Speed, aperture?

The first is ISO 3200, f/5.6, 400mm, 1/250th, handheld.

The second is ISO 12800, f/5.6, 400mm, 1/1600th, handheld.

Both are cropped around 50% or so.

It was late in the day and in the shade, except there is some backlighting of the bird on the first shot. It would be nice to have been able to shoot them in full sun so as to get the shutter towards 1/8000th and hopefully get "stopped" wings that are clear.

I borrowed the lens and didn't AFMA it. It's a very nice lens at that price point, I'm sure the new one will be even better, but probably only 20% better for 150% more cash.

Re: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM

I have been thinking of picking up one of these, but It will not autofocus with a 1.4 correct?
I have a Sigma 100-300 2.8 with a 1.4 and 2.0 extender. Best bet would be to probably just stick with that combo right? My copy is pretty soft though with the 2.0 extender on.

Thanks,,

Scott

That depends on the camera body. It will make your lens an effective f/8, so it will require a 1D to AF with the 1.4. The 5D Mk III will also AF with that combination (don't know about the other 5D versions).

It will autofocus on the 5D III or the 1D. But, my experience is that using the 1.4xTC is no better than upping the resolution by 1.4x in Photoshop.

The main difference, IMO, is that with the 1.4 TC you have a larger image in the viewfinder, making it easier to focus accurately.

100-400mm as an Emergency Macro -

While out looking for birds and other wildlife, occasionally you see something small that begs to have it picture taken. With the super closeup focusing ability of this lens, great shots are possible - try that with your 600mm !! ;)

I took this lens out last weekend with my new 5D Mk III to get a feel for this combination, and here are a few samples. Interestingly I hadn't thought of this as a landscape lens before, but now that I do, it opens a whole new world of possibilities :)

I just bought this lens and made it out for about 30 mins until the heat killed me off (Dubai summer is horrid), here are the first images I took, so the AF is a million miles faster than my old Sigma 150-500, I'm well chuffed with my purchase :)

I went from the Sigma 150-500 to the 100-400L as well, the loss in focal length is well worth the gain in image quality, AF speed, handling and portability. Since I sold the Sigma, my monopod hasn't seen any use because I'm able to hand hold the 100-400L all day. I am hoping for an updated version though as it's getting quite dated by now.

By the way when I was in Dubai, one of the locals said Dubai has two seasons: Summer and 'Hell', so good luck over there :-\

First let me say this, you guys have amazing pictures :D, i am an amateur and i like birds photography so i got a used 100-400 last week, done a few tests with my 600D and the AF is working and the quality seems good, but i am not 100% sure, the photos below were taken on my way back from an astrophotography camp, i didn't have much time due to the schedule, but at least got to take some real world tests, your feedback is welcomed :)

note: all photos have been post-processed.

I can't wait to collect my new 1.4xTC III in a couple of days, it will become a permanent fixture on my 100-400L Mk I, I will be venturing out this weekend to the local wetland hides, so wading birds with some flying raptors are my expected subjects. Here's hoping for some good quality images from the combo, would anyone have any tips or recomendations of this combo on a 70D?
Thanks in advance (feeling excited 8) )
