I like this, it's very nice but only after opening it full screen. Wish CR could do something about the poor resolution of the initial displayed photo, it's pathetic. Anyone know what the impediment is?

Jack

I believe it is the browser's resampling to rescale the full size image to the specified size on the page. I find it often looks better if I do the scaling in photo software for the browser display and link to the full size image. Not much CR can do about it.

Thanks Jack. I'm not very smart about how to make the pics look best on the website. The full size TIFF file is 300MB and looks pretty amazing (I still need to work on the blown highlights though). 5DSR + this lens is a great combo.

@Vern: Never mind the "too busy" situation. Could you produce another version with increased brightness and contrast?

I believe it has the potential to become an excellent photo (That's my personal opinion/preference ofcourse).

Thanks Tron - I was rushing this HDR file in an airport and agree it needs some help. Will take another stab.

better? this is just from reprocessing the TIFF generated in photomatix in DPP

I agree, the previous didn't seem to present the impression that it was a vibrant sunny day.

Jack

Thanks Jack and Tron.

After borrowing the 5DSR and the 11-24 from Canon last week, I ordered them on Friday. Arrived yesterday. I'm headed to Switzerland in October for 10 days and thought there was not a better time than now to upgrade my landscape kit. Now debating which lenses to take: 11-24 + 24-70 + 70-200 seems right, but I hate leaving the 24 TS at home - all might be a bit heavy (even for me). I will work mostly off a tripod. I could drop the 24-70 or the 70-200 and include the TS. Decisions, decisions...

Where in Switzerland are you going? When I go (which has been pretty frequently - 6 times last year, for example), I generally do take both the TS-E 17 and TS-E 24, in addition to the 24-70/2.8 II and sometimes the 70-300L (which I far prefer over my 70-200/2.8 II as a travel zoom).

No Switzerland trips planned soon, but I'll be going to the Loire Valley next month, and plan to pick up the 11-24L prior to that trip.

Have fun in CH!

Nothing beats well used tilt in a landscape. Whilst the 11-24 is a very nice lens that gives an intoxicating perspective initially, the IQ from a well set up T/S lens is noticeably higher. For landscape work I'd use the 17 &/or 24TS/E with extenders over the 11-24 every time.

As a general wide walk around lens the 11-24 is very nice and it gives creative options the traditional 16-35/17-40 never did, but it isn't the best landscape tool.

I lived there in graduate school 30 years ago, so my wife and I are thinking of Grindelwald, Zermatt and Arolla to re-visit some of our favorite hikes. Unfortunately, the Alps will be much browner than in 1986. I'm certainly leaning toward including the TS, only hesitation is my wife's impatience - I don't work fast with that lens.

Thanks Jack - I will likely take the 24TS. 11-24 was quite interesting to use but may not be critical to landscape in CH (though I will take it since its a new toy). I really got it with a return to Canyonlands in mind where the opportunities for UWA landscapes abound. Agree that tilt can be amazing in landscape - just need my wife to chill while I dither w the set-up.

Wanted to post a shot from the 11-24 to illustrate how handy 11mm can be in landscape. This is an HDR pano shot blended from 2 images at 11mm. 5DSR, ISO 100, 11-24 @ 11mm, f9. The trail on the right is leading around the glacier valley that descends from the east side of the Eiger - the shoulder of which is straight ahead. In 1860 the glacier came up almost to the level of the trail. When we lived here in 1986, the glacier still filled the lower valley where you can now see a lake.

I didn't end up using the TS very much b/c the locations I had in mind for it were not accessible (lifts closed for maintenance). 11-24 was great. Used it and the 24-70 the most. 70-200 II was also great for some Matterhorn shots I have posted under other threads.

another one at 11mm - didn't do as good a job with foreground interest, but gives an idea of how useful this focal length is in a tight valley. Screenshot to show detail with the 5DSR and 11-24 combo. HDR, ISO 100, f8.

Here are a couple from Tours, France. The first is the interior of the Saint-Gatien Cathedral, the second is a section of wall outside of the Gare de Tours (train station).
