It seems better than my 550D in every way, except sensor size. Mabye AF is a bit worse aswell.

That and maybe a bit limited in the lens selections. ;)

Changing lenses should not include using a hammer, but I suspect it is needed here :)

Compared, on the sheet, it may be worse than the competition, but Canon has an annoying habbit of making cameras that work great in the real world. Even though they seem worse on paper. I think this camera will surprise, positively.

I'm curious. What competition has a 1 inch sensor and a 24-600mm lens? The closest might be the Panasonic FZ1000 with its 1 in sensor and 25-400mm lens. Its currently about $200 cheaper, and about a year old. They appear to use the same sensor, low light performance is identical.

I am waiting for reviews and the eventual price drop before I replace my Canon SX 50 HS Powershot which suffers in low light. The raw samples on DPR show some very usable images at ISO 1600, and even 3200 is usable with NR. My SX50 is pretty worthless at ISO 800. I'd sacrifice the extra reach for the better ISO. It is going to be a large camera, but so is the competition.

I just called Canon and the gentleman said that the actual size of the so-called 1-inch sensor is 13.2mm x 8.8mm. Misleading? Dishonest? Inaccurate? Marketing hype?

Sensor size measurements were standardized long ago. Every DSLR uses the same method. Note that a 4:3 sensor and a 3:2 sensor are going to have different relative results due to the shape. Its weird, and long out of date.

Sensors are often referred to with a "type" designation using imperial fractions such as 1/1.8" or 2/3" which are larger than the actual sensor diameters. The type designation harks back to a set of standard sizes given to TV camera tubes in the 50's. These sizes were typically 1/2", 2/3" etc. The size designation does not define the diagonal of the sensor area but rather the outer diameter of the long glass envelope of the tube. Engineers soon discovered that for various reasons the usable area of this imaging plane was approximately two thirds of the designated size. This designation has clearly stuck (although it should have been thrown out long ago). There appears to be no specific mathematical relationship between the diameter of the imaging circle and the sensor size, although it is always roughly two thirds.

From the Canon website for the G3X:

"The PowerShot G3 X camera can be ideal for capturing and sharing all your adventures, indoors and out. With a compact, rugged design that’s easy to carry, this premium camera gives you inspirational image quality through its 1.0-inch, 20.2 Megapixel* High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor, plus the power to zoom to an incredible 25x."

Note the "1.0-inch" reference. Hmmmm.

What's puzzling? My S100 has a 1/1.7" sensor, my iPhone 6 has a 1/3" sensor. Mt. Spokane's post explains it...

I'd LOVE to be at Canon product meetings where they set prices. Surely the scenario is to establish an outrageous price, then use that as a setpoint -- and add 20% just for fun.

Must be very satisfying. Reminds me of what I did when I was setting product prices 30 years ago.

I guess if Sony can ask $1400 for their camera, $1000 doesn't look so bad.

There are many ways to determine prices.

1. Part Count

2. Weight

3. Match the competition

(Note, I purposely did not base any selling cost on the cost to make a item.)

I worked for a very large company which sometimes had very large sales in the hundreds of millions. A fable was going around the company, it was even taught in the management class that a middle eastern customer was pressing for a better price on a huge order. The salesman happened to look out his window as a freight train was slowly going by, and noted the number on a box car. It looked reasonable to him, so he offered it to the customer, and he closed the deal.

Looks quite nice actually.

Sensor size is a big deal, as is having the ability to change lenses. The sensor on an APS-C camera like the 550D has nearly 3 times the area of the 1" sensor on the G3X.

Will not even consider G3X and don't see, why anyone would buy it. Too large for shirt pocket. No viewfinder. Sony Rx100 IV far superior in every way. Even if its got to be by Canon, then similar-sized EOS-M3 offers larger APS-C sensor and lens mount. However, No EVF either ... So yet another fantastic camera by oh so innovative Canon ... for photographic masochists.

I find RX100III far superior to the RX100IV, because of the price and if I had no need for VF Canon G7x would be superior to RX100III because of the more usable focal length and again, cheaper price. What is the conclusion? Well obviously RX100IV is a s**tty camera that no one will buy because I find it to be inferior to the model it "replaces"... oh well no, people need different things so they'll buy what fit their needs*. Oh yeah and I almost forgot, could you show me at least one picture that has been taken at 600mm (FF effective) with RX100IV? ...oh wait, right. ;D I suppose RX100IV is superior to RX10II in every way to you, and there's nothing wrong about that.

*In a perfect world, in reality I suppose most of the sales are done by people who have nearly no clue about what they are buying. :p
