Darktable

Anyone here using dark table?

I usually just shoot jpg but did experiment with raw using dark table. Let's just say my results were less than stellar. Sharpness was much better than the in camera jpg but noise was much worse.

For anyone using dark table do you have any advise on basic settings for removing noise and sharpening? So far I am completely lost as to what type of sequence of events I should follow. Any pointers would be welcome.

Thanks
Ps: patience is not my strong suit. I have thrown computers down the basement steps before.

Not a huge help here, but I tried it (even sacrificed an old Windows laptop to Linux in order to give it a go); didn't like it. gave up.

Like you, I couldn't get the kind of image quality I'm used to from other converters; in particular, it was noisy, so although I gave it a fair crack of the whip, all it did for me was confirm that photographers who insist on using Linux just love to suffer..!

Found it:

http://www.darktable.org/resources/

for the general resources, videos, manual, and this website/repository of darktable styles/presets:
http://dtstyle.net/

download them, then go go the styles menu in "lighttable" tab, and import them.
For videos that show some of the points mentioned above:

I hope this helps.

Sorry about the log delay in responding. As there were few responses I haven't check this thread in some time. It looks like you spent some time at this and I appreciate it. I've tried following your post and performing said operations. Still have no idea what I am supposed to do but the pointers gave me a direction to go in.

Thanks for the links in your second post and to jannatul18 for the link as well.

I'll have to set the camera to jpg + raw to give me some real to work with and not the test shots I am currently using.

I've been using Darktable (on Ubuntu 14.04) only to export my RAW's, first with Canon 70D and now also with 7D mk II. Especially the newest 1.6.3 is really good. It's quite easy to produce images with better quality then those processed by the camera. The live preview is quite fast now so it's easy to experiment with different noise reduction plugins and settings. One of the best open source applications ever in my opinion.
