Hmmm... I wonder if this infers that a new version of this lens is coming next year?

The 24-70 was just updated last year (2012) right? I would think it is at the back of the queue of lenses to be updated.

Isn't there a rumor of a new one coming out, with IS?

Technically, the subject of this thread is wrong and amounts to false advertising.

The purchase price is NOT $1699, rather it is $1999.

A mail in rebate does not count against the purchase price.

OK, maybe "purchase price" is technically not the correct term; perhaps "bottom line, actual out-of-pocket cost to acquire – short of stealing, and not including any sales tax or shipping – price" would be more precise.

But unless the mail-in rebate is fulfilled by a merchandise credit or some such "you have to buy more stuff to redeem the rebate" scheme , in lieu of an actual check or cash card, it's still what you end up paying for the lens. All Canon is doing is counting on some inevitable breakage to reduce the cost to them of the price reduction.

Rebate Form

Hey guys, I just bought this lens. [EF 24-70 II]

However, I had never bought anything with a mail-in rebate before.

I am trying to figure out if I am doing it right...I bought it from Amazon and the selling price was $1,999. Will Cannon care that this price is lower than what they are selling the lenses for? Will I still get the $300 rebate, bringing the total to $1,699?

And I have to mail the receipt from the sale to Cannon too, and not just the upc cutout, right?

Thank you.
