Certainly not a good investment. Is this thing even serviceable still?

I'm quite content using the 600mm II + 2x III. Sure it is f/8, but I bet the image quality is better than the bare 1200mm. Lets not forget that these 1200s were FD mounts that were retro fitted to EF.

If you were looking to invest in Canon lenses instead of your 401k for instance, I'd suggest buying 80k or whatever the selling price worth of new Canon version II big whites.

I'm certainly not going to buy it, but it does make me wonder.

Only 20-25 of them, the rest were all made as EF natively. Only around 20-25 FD 1200's were made, best guesses I have seen are less than 200, but way more than 20-25, EF 1200's are out there.

I'm not sure about that! ???

I'm pretty sure only 5 NFD 1200s were built.

I'm lucky enough to have used both the NFD & EF versions! 8)

I am an old hand at ebay and pretty sure i would not touch this listing with a barge pole. No feedback for any sizeable items , not a business seller , as far as i know way above the paypal protection limit , and yet people have bid 1000s of dollars already ? Is this for real ? Post a photo and make a years wage all at once seems like a good idea :)

I'd guess you're right. The 600 II is a very capable lens, and IS, even when tripod mounted is very useful with lenses this long.

What we need is Bryan over at TDP to get a 1200/5.6 in for review, then we can all learn from his test chart shots :)

It got up to ~70,000.00 before the plug was pulled. I was watching it for a bit of fun. I would guess that either someone reported this as a possible scam or that there is a computer program that identifies a combination of unusual bids and type of seller, and alerts a human to decide if the listing needs to be smacked down. Alternatively, someone could have emailed seller and told him that they were coming to look at it in Korea at the reserve price, and seller could have pulled the listin.

Methinks it was a scam. I looked at it and as soon as I saw the words "Selling on behalf of <some famous south Koran photographer>" and "my paypal limit is $5000, so you will have to pay in another way" it jut looked soooo dodgy, especially given the small bits of kit and other odds and ends the guy had sold.

Hey ho. Expecting a lottery win this weekend so I'll order up the 13th one direct from Canon ;)
