first shots from my sigma 105mm f1.4

these are shots from my 105mm f1.4 sigma art lens today...
i only had it for an hour.. so the first thing i wanted know .......
was ..how the bokeh compared to my 85mm f1.2 L mk ii

which i already sold..

i tried to see how the background.. looked
how the quality worked
I like to try to have a second subject...if I can...in the background blur...

and also I tried to see if it got too..'busy'....
i figured it already was a sharp lens.... and ...yup...that turned out good..
but the bokeh seemed very nice..... imo

and that is part of what i wanted....to verify
....
any way...it aint art...my shots..i mean........
I am just forcing the background ...in different setups...
to show its ... stuff..

so take it as you find it.. it is not science at this point...
i will do other stuff later..
I would have liked to see a coma test from LensTip...
but I am too early..

- so far - i believe it is as good as my 85L was

so i thought i would share

tom

https://www.amazon.com/photos/share/zSUd9fgGmtRGDe6gMNsnxaT21LbpBfB5BcWQlg2ykxV

the hummer feeder is f1.4, f2.8, f 5.6, f8

then second hummer feeder is f1.4, f2, f2.8, f4, f5.6...and f8

I wanted to see people rendered in blur behind a sharp main foreground subject.. you can see that with an f1.4 shot with some trellis stick in fore ground.
at f1.4 background blown out................. then at f8...... with a couple appearing in the background

so I am starting to think this is a reasonable replacement for the 85L mk ii... I sold
and thats what I waited for....
I did try the sig 135 f1.8 ..
it was nice but I believe this bokeh is better...

I will play a bit more before I decide..

I have not seen any tests or other pics posted for this lens..
I must have got an early copy...

UPDATE: lenstip samples here..just posted late...jun 20
want to see coma test ...

"Bokeh balls so big and so soft that you'll never see mirrorbox clipping that's going on." -- Sigma's tagline ;D

Curious to see some nighttime background lighting bokeh to see if we'll get the d-shaped bokeh balls again. Did you shoot this on an EF DSLR or an adapted A7?

1dx2

I want to say...

I had the 105... waiting on the shelf..
took it out a couple times...

Decided against it.. (it went to the rental dept...)
because of size and weight..

I bought the 135 f1.8

Now I must say the QUALIY of the blur - the bokeh
is as good as the 85L f1.2 mk II I sold..
the 135 i close behind it..
but I can see someone just shooting for the blu quality ow and then..
but at 72 yrs old.. I aint looking for the 50% weight gain over the 135 f1.8

yet I still miss it..

but that is irrational...

so I could just have it and play once in a while..
but the 135 proved more useful to me..

for me 14L mk II, 35L mkII and Sig 135 f1.8 make a
good span...

it DOES take the Tamron sp pro 1.4TC ok ..sharp... but mumbles a bit on focus..
the bare lens snaps to attention without the TC..

the 135 replaces my 85L mk II AND 135 f2 lenses.. as far as I am concerned

so no one looked here and commented ..much..
and Peta Pixel just 'reviewed' 135, 105 znd 85 sigmas together..

I DID want to see the coma test from lens tip..
but the 135 fits in the bag wll ..
I can even use it with the tamron 15-30 and cover things I want...

just to wrap-up this post .. more stuff will come out about the 105 f1.4 soon...

later

Lenstip is taking a long time to post their review. Maybe they had a bum copy or something and had to replace it? Anyway, looking forward to their review.

If not on OLAF, I would also like to see it tested at PZ / optical limits to understand its 50 MP resolving power. I cannot believe LT hasn't migrated their test camera to the 5DS yet.

yes 50MP is important info IMO too

here is a lightweight review..
https://petapixel.com/2018/07/09/sigma-bokeh-master-105mm-f-1-4-art-vs-the-85mm-f-1-4-and-135mm-f-1-8/

but for myself I tried to make the background 'busy' and the 105 f1.4 seemed able to smear the objects ...nicely..
...
I still love it
but ...I am a small man and this lady was too tall for me
... but lovely just the same..

we are lucky to have all this to choose from...

I hear you. I have a 200 f/2L IS loaner coming in, and I am bracing for the wrist + back pain with that one.

At least the 105mm is short so the center of mass is close to the camera body. So far all the reviewers are commenting (negatively) on how heavy this lens is. If I were having to hold it for all day shoots, I would probably look elsewhere; but, for an hour or so it would be manageable.

It’s now up on lenstip review. Stellar resolution, but AF seems to be an issue when off the center point.

yes ... I saw that.. not so with 135..for me and others..
odd..
well now I feel good about my choice.. 135 f1.8
the 105 sharpness seemed 'NEARLY' as good as the 135..
but for me I chose the 135 because of
....reach
... size/weight
....the edge in sharpness.. it seems coma was there for the 135 too.. I could not see that... of course
..
I mean we are splitting hairs..
but I still have my hair ...mostly..

but the dang thing crowded out my other cameras and lenses..
rude...
so......the bokeh is the best now.. I swear..past 85L f1.2 mk ii ....
my little trials .. made me a believer..

and 135 is just fine...
as a bokeh runner-up

I want to say my 135 snaps to exact focus.. on 1dx2...
a stream of license plates cars passing....bike riders flying by...
yup!.... in various light... it is so dead-on...
and at f2 it is 10 clicks above the Canon 85L f1.4.. re: lens tip
I usually want I.S. at these distances.. I love I.S.
but this thing is so solid..I swear

I miss the 105 a bit...
squishy blobs....
haha... bokeh nuts... me too

sigh

I dont want to carry an apartment fridge when I go for a walk..

this forum is so good... I learned so much.. each week...
