The S95 sounds interesting. I'd really like a compact with a decent lens, and to be honest the main use for it would be indoors and on nights out where low light shooting would be essential.

I have wanted the Panasonic LX3 for a while, but their upgrade doesn't do it for me. The fixed f2.0 of this deffinitely gets my interest.

Re: Introducing the PowerShot S95, SX130 & SD4500

Well, I am super excited! I loved the S90, but didn't have the scratch to get one at the time. I will be interested to see how it does w/ the HDR thing. the HD video (even though it is "only" 720") is a nice addition for me as well. Also excited to see how the Hybrid IS works on it. Curious to see how much better the low light handling on this camera is from it's predecessor.

No super drastic changes, but it is a really nice set of additions to make a great camera even better. Really hoping I will be able to get one of these this time around. This is definitely better than a printer ;D

Fixed? Attached to the camera indeed, but it's f/2.0 - f/4.9.
That's me looking at the bullet points and not looking further into the specs. I guess f2.0-4.9 is acceptable as indoors you are going to have it wide open most of the time.

Still tempted with something like this.

Re: Introducing the PowerShot S95, SX130 & SD4500

It seems that Canon decided to become a unique company which produces new PHOTO cameras which have almost nothing PHOTOGRAPHICALLY new during past 2 years?! Really, let's have a look - T1i - only increased MPix, T2i - even more increased sensor MPix and slightly better ISO, Canon 7D - late answer to Nikon D300 - same sensor as T2i and 19 focus points (vs. 51 of D300, even D95 is believed to have 39), 5D Mark 2 - again increased sensor MPix and slightly better ISO 1D Mark 4 - far behind Nikon D3s in every aspect, except... availability. We got S95 tonight, which has only HDR feature new (again, I consider only related info). If cnet news is not fake then the same "upgrade" has G12.
Now we expect 60D wth swivel display and plastic body and possibly again same sensor as T2i.
Sorry guys, I really don't see any PHOTOGRAPHY related news here!

Yap. Let's wait until D95 and 60D are finally official. But if the D95 rumors are true, while the 60D remains with their xxD-typical-9-cross-type AF sensors than nikon wins this one. We'll see.

Re: Introducing the PowerShot S95, SX130 & SD4500

was just on DP Review and they mentioned that the back control wheel has a more positive "click" feel to it now. I remember that annoying me on the old one, so that is a nice update. Again, I know these aren't anything big, or maybe drastic is a better word, but I really do like them.

I do find it interesting that the video is 24fps and that 30fps isn't offered.

Ohh, and it also has the same external coating as the 7D. Nice touch :)

Here is the DPReview link if anyone is interested: http://dpreview.com/news/1008/10081918canonpowershots95.asp

They need to leave space for the S96... ::)

That might be. I think someone else mentioned that they were wondering if there would be a quick replacement for it (don't remember who said that). I would imagine that most companies leave a few things off that they could have put on so that they can upgrade later. Don't get me wrong, I like the 24p...nice look, but I was just surprised as 30p is almost standard. Ehhh...It's still such a good camera I'm not going to let it bug me. If I can afford one I definitely will get one as it meets my needs.

Re: Introducing the PowerShot S95, SX130 & SD4500

Been shooting Canon compacts for about 8 years now, and I've kept track of just about every one! Nice new cameras, but nothing overly exciting. I wrote them up on my blog here: http://www.aputure.com/blog/2010/08/19/new-nikon-lenses-canon-compacts/

The SX line is moving in the right direction. I don't know what the hell they were thinking with the SD4500 IS...

This is a serious question, because I want to get a Powershot and have been looking at them. Why are there so many models? The SD4000 and the S95 seem very similar. Several families - S, SD, SX, A, - overlaping price points, very similar features.

Has anyone sorted this all out?

From Wiki:

A series: "Easy and Fun" budget cameras ranging from point-and-shoot to prosumer cameras
D series: waterproof, freeze- and shock-resistant
E series: design-oriented budget cameras
G series: flagship cameras with advanced features
S/SD series (also known as PowerShot Digital ELPH, Digital IXUS and IXY Digital): "Performance and Style" ultracompact point-and-shoot cameras
S/SX series: ultra-zoom cameras
S series: originally a series of compact point-and-shoot cameras, currently a series of prosumer cameras slotting beneath the G series

Not sure that helps, though. ;)

Specifically, for the SD4000 vs. S95, see THIS. Basically, the S95 and forthcoming G12 are the logical choices from someone used to shooting with a dSLR - RAW capability, good manual controls, etc.
