I must sasy that I think Canon has packed a lot into the Canon T4i / 650D... and the RRP looks good. 8)

Clearly there is a heavy emphasis on video, which is making up a sizeable target market for those seeking to either enter the DSLR world, or upgrade from earlier models.

I'm a still photographer - but am glad to see there are some real improvements (eg more powerful AF, possibly a more useful screen with touch-screen entry functionality, etc)... so I'm hoping that this heralds more real still photo improvements for the 7DmkII.

My current body is a 7D... so - whenever a time for an upgrade comes... competition, advanced R&D and technology are good things!

Happy shooting (&/or filming) everyone!

Paul

  • The other things I note as being useful for still photography are:
    • 5 fps continuous shooting (that's very decent for the Canon XXXD / Rebel / entry level line!)
    • Integrated Speedlite Transmitter
    • Spot metering

I wonder if the 18MP sensor is new, or the same as the 7D, etc...? Hmmmm

The increased ISO capability of 25,600 (*with boost) is also new. I wonder if this is to do with processing power (ie the Digic 5 processor)... or software / firmware upgrade.

Anyway, a decent upgrade .... well done Canon.

Cheers everyone! ;)

Thanks so much for this!

I preordered the 4Ti with the 18-135 and the 40mm at B&H through your links! I really apprecaite you stepping up to the plate with the donations.

I actually would have preferred to order through Adorama - they have been helping me lately on an order. I'll get them next time.

I **never** thought I would spend $1,400 on a Rebel! ;)

I shoot almost all L glass. Something like the 18-135 isn't something I would normally bother with. But if I can use the 4Ti like a camcorder with that zoom, it will save me at least $1,500, as I was getting ready to buy a Canon XH-1A or similar camcorder.

Whether it gets all of the way to camcorder range or not, the auto focus and new sensor look absolutely fantastic for video! happy with Canon. The next few releases this year ought to be interesting too.

Cheers!
Michael

this looks like a fantastic camera forvideo! I am at the point, too, where I need a Canon X1-A

ok...so the press release isn't clear...

Can you use Auto Focus for video ONLY if you use an STM lens?

Does that mean my $1200 24-105 L lens is no good for video?

Everything works as it would now, except if you have the magical combination of the T4i + a STM lens, you gain the ability to AF faster/smoother in live view mode than a non T4i/STM combo. The T4i will still have the old standard contrast detection AF for live view when using non STM lenses.

My friend just took back his 50mm 1.4 that I borrowed for six months. I was using it as my walkabout lens but I just pre-ordered the new 40mm 2.8 to see if I would like it better than the 50mm 1.4

The mtf charts of the 40 compared to the 50 1.8 and 50 1.4:

ef40stm_mtf.gif
ef_50_18mtf.gif
ef_50_14mtf.gif

The results are impressive. The 40 should be both contrasty and decently sharp (at f/2.8 and f/8) across most of the frame.

And just for fun:

Awesome, thanks! Can't wait to play with the new "shorty fourty" when it arrives.

I'm surprised with the pre order price of this in Japan, with the body at 90,000 yen which is over 1,100 USD. (although there is a 10,000Yen point back for use on other items) and the 18-135 kit at 13000 Yen (1600 USD).

Do these prices often drop quickly in Japan after release?

I am buying the Camera solely for Video and as the T3i is selling for around 50,000 new, am struggling to justify spending the extra 40,000 yen.

Thanks for the MTF charts... the 40 does look great... i carry my 450D with me everywhere, usually with my 50 1.8, since it is small and light. I generally shoot around 2.8-4. The fact that it is smaller, slightly wider (which i would like) and has good optics means I am sold! Do we know when it will be released???
