Re: New Canon USA Instant Rebates on Cameras & Lenses

Not sure what if anything I will do about this. I don't have anything wider than the 24mm end of my kit zoom for my 6D2, but if I need superwide I can get out my T3i and use the 10-22mm. The fact that I haven't needed to do that in many months suggests that I can hold off getting the 16-35mm f/4 that I'm pretty sure I want eventually.

It would make more sense now for me to get a telephoto, since all I have is a rather marginal 75-300mm I got as a deal with the Rebel. I think maybe the 100-400mm zoom makes sense for me, but it is a little more of a stretch financially for me right now. (And, yes, I have plenty of credit, so it is not like I will get into trouble if I overextend a bit.) But the 16-35mm is in the price range I would be fairly comfortable with right now. I'm dealing with GAS issues, I guess. A discount makes that worse, which is of course its purpose.

When I was in the process of switching to full frame, I did something similar. 10-22 on the crop and everything else on full frame. Back then, the 16-35 II and and the 17-40 were the only options, and those were weak outside of the center. However, that situation didn't last long. It was more convenient to bring an additional lens than a lens and a body, plus my crop camera was old (20D) at that point.

I just picked up the 16-35 f4, got one used from Adorama but it came wrapped in original box and looks like new to me. I love it, as do others who pointed me that way on a thread I posted considering it vs used 16-35 f2.8 II (not III) vs Tamron 15-30 f2.8. It's a good choice IF you plan to ditch your t3i and EFS 10-22. If not, then probably you don't need it.

Re: New Canon USA Instant Rebates on Cameras & Lenses

I went to the Chick Corea concert on campus last night, and afterward I saw a guy I knew who graduated last year. He had got a 5D2 from his dad some years back, and probably won't upgrade until he gets a little more established in his career. His new toy is the 85mm f/1.4, which he loves. I told him about my choices, and he really likes the 17-40. I still think the 16-35 f/4 is a better choice for me for not that much difference in price, list anyway.

When I look back into the woods on a pretty day like today, I want the telephoto before the blooms fade on the dogwoods. (Another topic for another thread is how to get the sense of a sea of dogwoods. I may try again with my 100mm this afternoon if it stays clear, stopping down for depth of field to get all of the blooms sharp, and slightly underexposing to preserve as much detail as possible in the white flowers. Closeups of a few blossoms look good (hence the telephoto), especially with the clichéd male cardinal on the limb [NC and VA state bird and flower]. But all my photos that try to get the sense of being in a forest filled with dogwoods just don't work that well.)
