I thought you had found a 1.6xTC. It is still a 600mm lens. The 5DS sensor has the same size pixels as the 7D and so has the same theoretical resolution. 600mm doesn't magic into 960mm focal length when you put it onto a 5DS instead of a 5D3. The effective field of view on the crop is that of a 600mm lens, not the effective focal length.

Yes, I understand. I know it's a 600 mm lens. Thanks for your response. Have a great day. Mine will be spent trying to figure out how to take pictures while nursing a broken right foot.

Nice shots, and very sharp on a 7D. With the 150-600 you won't have to zoom with your feet, which should save your ankle.

Thanks! The ankle thing is a real pain in the caboose. It makes me appreciate much more the things people with real disabilities face. Even simple tasks become complex (can't weight bear).

Posted elsewhere:

1. Female yellow-headed blackbird collecting nesting material: ISO800; 600mm; 0.67ev; f/7.1; 1/800sec.
2. Pelican fishing buddies: ISO100; 172mm; 0.67ev; f/6.3; 1/1600sec (not the best angle to have shot from but the best I could do).

I decided to try some manual focus with this lens. The first picture was taken handheld at 600mm, f/6.3, ISO100, 1ev and 1/400second. The second picture was taken handheld at 361mm, f/5.6, ISO100, -0.67ev and 1/640second. I used the viewfinder, not the LCD screen. The lens is obviously not designed for manual focus. The focus ring is tiny and not very 'sensitive' to fine gradations of focus. It's location on the lens barrel and its very narrow width make it extremely awkward to use handheld, not that many people are likely going to use it that way. Still, you can manually focus it handheld and get decent results as long as you are dealing with a fairly static subject and don't expect a high keeper rate. It worked much better than I expected.

How did you get a focal length of 960mm?

7D is a crop sensor camera, so the effective focal length of the 150-600mm Sigma at the long end is approximately 1.6x600 = 960mm

The effective field-of-view, is similar to 960mm (i.e. "frames like"). The focal length is still 600mm.

Not being a gardener, I don't know the first flower in these 2 shots, but you did a masterful job in my opinion on composing and capturing their essence. Excellently focused too! Thanks for sharing.
