Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 AT-X FX

Re: Tokina 16-28mm F2.8

Take a look at the comparisons via DXO using the 5D3, comparisons vary on the 5DII.

5D3:
16mm
2.8-Canon
4/5.6 Tokina by a mile
8 Tokina
11 Tokina
22 Canon by a hair

20mm
2.8 Canon slightly better
4/5.6 Tokina
8 Tokina
11 Tokina
22 Even

28mm
2.8 Tokina
4/5.6 Tokina
8 Tokina
11 Tokina
22 Even

I see Canon being slight better at 2.8 in all the tests on the 5D3...( I'm using the Tokina for my wide angle star shots and trails at 2.8 and its really really good)... fantastic at f16 for landscapes. Here is one out at Badwater this year.. Flarealicious

I haven't had this lens long yet, only a few weeks, but I've been enjoying it a lot. It has really great resolution, though reports of its tendency to flare were not exaggerated. The large cap that comes with it actually works pretty well to block the sun at times to reduce flare, but that also necessitates holding the camera and lens in one hand which is somewhat heavy.

A few more pictures with this lens. One thing I've noticed is that my 6D consistently underexposes the images, necessitating an adjustment of anywhere from 2/3 of a stop to 1.5 stops (just based on what I have to adjust it to for the picture to look "right"). If anyone else uses this lens and comes across this thread, I'd be interested to know if they also have this experience.

The images are not only downsized somewhat to fit within the attachment size limits, but they are also admittedly not the sharpest pictures I've been able to produce with this lens due to some motion blurring. It happened to be raining out so I was using the camera with one hand braced against my other arm while holding an umbrella.

I like this lens! Yes, there are flare issues, and some folks may have issues with the AF, but I don't use AF with this lens.

I had the lens for a few years and used it fairly regularly. I never had issues with the AF. I had heard some people saying manual focus because an issue because of damage to the clutch governing the manual focus ring.

Overall, I thought the lens was superb. Like you say, though, just gotta be careful of that flaring.
