I'm wondering what the best way to get stable videos would be, outside of using my tripod. There are times when taking and setting up a tripod isn't very practical.

I shoot short clips of vacation activities and outdoor shots most of the time.

I don't have Image Stabilization on my 16-35mm, but if getting a 24-70mm with IS is the best option, that might work for me.

I've seen that iPhones and GoPros have handheld devices that help stabilize the video. Both powered and unpowered. I'm not sure how good those will work though if there is a lot of vibration or bumps if you are jogging.

IS in a lens will not help if you are jogging. A stabilizer can help, the cost depends on the weight of camera and lens as well as the ability to stabilize in difficult situations.

Expect over $1,000 for a gyro stabilized unit. For one adopted to jogging, I'd go with a video camera that is smaller, the cost for a stabilizer will be much less. The powerful motors needed to move a heavy camera and lens quickly eat up a huge amount of power.

For a Go-Pro and can be chest mounted. You can get a stabilizer for a smart phone as well.

The handheld devices for gropro and iPhone will not be able to handle the weight of your Canon body. Ikan recently came out with one that will:

I use a DJI Ronin-M gimble. Its only a 3-axis so it won't stabilize up and down motion when you are walking/running. You can also stabilize in post
