It stands for profit. EF was said to stand for electronic focus, but I don't think that the R stands for anything.

OK. Thanks for that. I remember searching back when I bought my first L lens, but couldn't find anything from Canon that could confirm that. It's still a bit ironic. I'm surrounded by luxury, and yet I feel so poor...
