So... I have an s100, and am wondering if any of you all out there think the x10 outperforms it in the "real world". Such as IQ, ISO, etc.

i think the lens is the big differentiation for me, I'm not keen on the electronic zoom on the S100
the X10 is less like a compact in operation, but i'm looking at it for a very specific purpose rather than general use

I can't really directly compare them, but I have the X10 and when compared with images I have seen others produce from the S100 the X10 wins hands down. A friend of mine had the opportunity to use both cameras and wrote reviews on them

I pushed the camera quite hard while I was there and IMHO the results are pretty indicative of the capabilities of the camera.

excellent reviews! thanks for that and i think your images have sold me on the X10, were the shots of the sphere off a tripod or hand held? how did you find the high iso experience ie 3200+

Based on what I've seen, the X10 wins on IQ factors. Also, the lens is much better in terms of aperture (f/2.8 vs. f/5.9 at the long end, meaning >2 stops better when zoomed in with low light). So, if that's the definition of real world better, the X10 is the way to go.
For me, though, the real world utility of such a camera is 'fits in my pocket'. The X10 is wider and taller, and most importantly twice as thick as the S100. Too thick for my pockets = left at home (if I'm carrying something bulkier anyway, I won't compromise on IQ and I'll just bring the dSLR).
So for me, of the two the S100 is the winner in the (my) real world.

Yes, impressively fast lens on the X10. High-ISO images are also great for that small sensor.

Very interesting. I also tried the S100 and was somewhat disappointed. I get of those that harp on its small size. That is fine for some, but others including myself prefer a fater lens, better erformance, and battery life.
How does the X10 compare with the LX5?

Some answers on X10 questions.
- All of my shots were done hand held. I believe most of Ron's shots were hand held as well - though he occasionally uses a tripod for panos.

I still have a 7D and a 5D2. The X10 will not change this (though the upcoming 1D-X will). I bring the X10 when I go somewhere where I do not want to haul all of that equipment and am not planning to take serious pictures in the first place.

No compact is going to approach the IQ of a DSLR anytime soon, some compacts may have better IQ than others, but if you already have the better gear, it's just nice to have something small to put in your pocket and forget about.
Mind you, if you only have a compact maybe the better IQ of the X10 would make it the number 1.... :

In terms of the X10, I prefer to go by pictures taken in a real life situation rather than a review. I have taken both the G11 and the X10 to DisneyWorld. In the case of the G11 I found it did not meet my needs and took my 5D2 to my next Disney trip. With the X10 I no longer feel it is necessary to take my 5D2.
Certainly the 5D2 blows away the X10 in terms of image quality and many other features. The 7D also outperforms it in many ways and I do not intend the X10 to replace either. However for an out and about camera where I do not want to carry a lot of gear it is currently the best thing out there.

I don't doubt the performance on the X10, It has me interested as well, however upon reading the review, it reads as if he wanted the camera to fail, in my opinion.kirispupis said:

Not a direct - or even a technical comparison - but I did have a s95 when I bought an x10. Used both of them
on a trip to Europe and when I got home I gave the s95 to my ten year old grandson.

(Though I don't think it's fair to compare the S95/LX5 with the X10, since the X10 is more of the level of advanced compact - like G12 and so. Panasonic doesn't have something in that category - maybe GF3, but that's EVIL, not a compact).

Good point! Though I am curious what the LX5 successor will be like which should be out later this year. Hopefully smaller than the G1X and a faster lens along the current model.

The image of the fireworks really shows the X10 issue with white orbs. Apparently, they have not been able to fix it, and are saying that they meet specs.
It is much worse than the black dots that the 5D MK II had, and once you look and see them, you might be pretty frustrated.

I've had an X10 since December, and to be honest, I rarely take it anywhere with me. I'm so used to shooting with an SLR that using a compact camera feels so 'disengaged' and the controls feel so small and fiddly. The image quality is okay I suppose, but certainly no match for my nearly 5-year-old EOS 40D.
As a fashion accessory, the X10 is a real winner though... It looks awesome.
It's not pocketable like the S100 is, which is a good reason to think twice before buying one. In fact, when housed in its leather case, it's not much smaller than my 40D with 50mm 1.8 lens on.
