This was flying across the sky of Cambridge UK this afternoon. R5 and 100-400mm II nailed it, but I haven't a clue of what it is. Any ideas?

Looks like somebody with an 'L' in their name has lost a letter on some celebration? As in, this looks like one of those letter shaped balloons to me.

It was big, the size of a small plane and moving fast.

Well, the size is impossible to judge from the image with nothing but the sky as context. So too large for a balloon?

Which direction was it going in? Not just up?
North, parallel to the ground.

I think a UFO thread is well overdue!

Again no frame of reference other than it was taken at 300mm on a 7d and it was very small by the time this was taken

Seems like you're at least following proper UFO photography guidelines, with that nice blur you've got going on :p
And there was me thinking I'd over sharpened it! :ROFLMAO:
In fairness i should work out how much this is cropped, the subject was tiny.
I reckon they were balloons tied together but it's easy to see how things can be misinterpreted
