Are we finally going to get f/2.8 constant aperture zoom lenses for APS-C/RF-S?

When I was on 7D, the EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 was my workhorse lense, and it was a good lens..... They should do a better version of it for APS-C R bodies....

I became an expert getting the dust out of them, got it down to a 5 minute process. Couldn't send them to renters otherwise. The push pull 100-400 was pretty quick after you got the thing open the first time (It took a dremel). Those two lenses...............

What about the rumoured RF-S 15-60mm 2.8 Z lens?
As a C70 owner I would love it!

That's still in the pipeline, I have seen it on a roadmap. There have only been a couple of times when something on a roadmap never came to fruition. Stuff gets axed or reworked.

I thinking the "new line" APS-C camera will be made for such a lens.

This is old enough now, but you get stuff like this.... and a lot of the time dates are missed and the odd time a lens listed on one of these things never comes. Yes, I thought the f/11 lenses were a typo, this came a year before they hit the market.

I did not notice the dust.... not sure if fitting a filter helped..... but when I sold if off, it look ok... and the buyer was happy too....

I heard of the push-and-pull design suck in dust, but I have no experience with that one...

Even at a price point well above the body, that would be a very popular lens, particularly if the power zoom were built-in and compact.

Yes, filters helped with dust on the 17-55, but as rentals.. they add cost and are way more hassle than they're worth.

There is now the Sigma 18-50/2.8 DC DN for RF-S, so a Canon equivalent would have to offer something more and I am not sure simply including IS is enough. If they can make a 16-70 f/2.8, then that would be more compelling.

If it has "Canon" and "IS"* on it, the Sigma won't matter. The Sigma is worth what it costs, but it's not punching above its weight.

Having 18mm at the wide end is a big negative against 15mm (as suggested)

Extending the range of wide angle zoom lenses come with compromises. FF shooters are fine with 24-70 and they buy them in droves. Canon extended a lens to 105 which lines up with your suggestion and it costs a grand more, sometimes twice as much during certain times of the year... And that's to maintain optical performance through the range. It's also enormous.

So instead of extending what is essentially a meaningless 20mm, it'd be far better to put the cost into sealing the lens and keeping it small and lightweight with great optical performance. How much is someone willing to pay for a non-L RF-S lens? Pick the right compromises.

And the APS-C lens rumored couldn't be this lens?

Could be.

I don't believe they're just going to make every lens a Z to cover photographers as well. I'm pretty sure we're going to see a video focused APS-C camera, it may mate well with that.

Who knows... The "Z" isn't really being utilized in large numbers yet with the only current lens and Canon's crappy zoom motors.
