Company claims third most U.S. Patents, placing it ahead of fellow tech giants globally.

MELVILLE, N.Y., January 10, 2018 – As part of its mission to redefine the boundaries of innovation and expand the possibilities of imaging technology, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, has announced that its parent company, Canon Inc., based in Tokyo, Japan, ranks third among U.S. patent holders in 2017.

According to patent results issued by IFI CLAIMS Patent Services, a leading producer of global patent databases, Canon was granted a total of 3,285 patents in 2017. This is the 32nd consecutive year that Canon Inc., has been ranked among the top five U.S. patent holders and for the 13th consecutive year, ranked first among Japanese companies for the number of U.S. patents granted. The patents granted demonstrate the company’s commitment to using a robust set of intellectual property rights to develop visionary consumer, business and medical solutions.

“Having landed once again among the top three patent holders, Canon’s longstanding and continued commitment to strategic research and development through continued innovation is evident,” said Seymour Liebman, executive vice president, chief administrative officer and general counsel, Canon U.S.A. Inc. “With 3,285 patents to our name, Canon is immensely proud of our strong standing among fellow tech giants as we continue to cement our role as a worldwide leader in imaging solutions in 2018 and beyond.”

In 2017, Canon U.S.A. imaging IP and technology innovation has earned Emmy recognition for its 4K cameras and lenses and opened up new research opportunities for wildlife habitats in the dark with its low light camera, the ME20. Ripples of Canon’s technological advancements were also felt in the production printing industry, where the company unveiled breakthrough new technology such as the Océ Colorado 1640 wide format printer, powered by Canon’s UVgel technology, which is the world’s first 64-inch roll-to-roll printer.

The patent news also comes on the heels of Canon’s innovation showcase at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) where its “Visionaries Welcome” themed-booth featured previously-patented technologies integrations in manufacturing, retail, sports and entertainment and experiential marketing solutions. For more information on Canon and its products, please visit www.usa.canon.com.

Sad part is, even professional reviewers are falling for this notion of Canon not innovating like deranged fans when actual data shows complete opposite.

The story of the DOA 6D MkII should be held up as an even more illuminating story. Decried across the board by just about every reviewer and pundit, it now turns out to be a near perfect high end YouTube/vlogging camera with it's full sized sensor, DPAF that is an industry benchmark, and the flip out touch screen. It is now being adopted and used by many of the highest viewed and most popular tech and camera savvy vloggers. Oh how the pendulum swings...

Well, to quote Shania Twain, "That don't impress me much!". When I see the quality and quantity of lenses that Sigma is putting out, and the innovation that Sony is putting into their cameras, Canon can file a ton of patents ... it's what comes out the door that counts, and Canon crawls along at a snails pace and the output is sometimes short of amazing, such as the CA in the new 85mm f1.4 and the same old DR in the 6D II.

Who cares about some rumblings of the CEO:
“Our primary management goal this year is to raise our antennas high toward cutting-edge technology,” Mitarai tells Nikkei. “It is on this point where we lag behind other companies.”

Yeah. One can't help but love the innovation of Sigma's unreliable AF or Sony's overheating problems and suckie lenses. ::) Reliability, reliability, reliability.

How dare you say Canon is not innovating? Here is the proof with data... Did you not read that Canon "the leader in digital imaging solutions" has been on the top list for 32 years in a row? Did you not see their industry leading latest release the 6D2 with 1080p video and poor DR even compared to its predecessor, AF system just lifted out of 80D, too lazy to even bother to spread the AF points, for a whopping $2000 in 2017? Is that not innovation. If you are realistic and say that is not good enough be called as "innovation" in 2017 then you need to look at this the worlds best camcorder from "the only leader in digital imaging solutions in the world" the XA15 - a camcorder with 1/2.84" sensor, 1080p, 8bit, 4:2:0 color sampling and does not support high frame rate costs just $1900. Innovation, innovation, innovation and full of innovations ;) you absolutely have no choice but to believe it is innovation.

6D2 is indeed DOA but EOS 6D Mark II + PIXMA PRO-100 + BG-E21 Battery Grip for EOS 6D Mark II + LP-E6N Battery Pack + SG-201 Photo Paper Semi-Gloss 13x19" (50 Sheets) + 64GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Memory Card Bundle for $1350 is a steal deal. Now calculate the price of the camera. In my knowledge I have not seen a new camera being discounted that much. Now instead of ripping off its customers if Canon had announced this camera at $1400 price point at least it makes some sense not at $2000.

No, they are telling you the truth.

when actual data shows complete opposite.

Having tons of patents and nothing innovative comes out the door doesn't even count. What was the last time there was a camera came from Canon that can be considered as innovative?

Cat closes it eyes and thinks the whole world is dark. Canon fan boys situation is exactly the same

I'm assuming this is over the whole company rather than just camera patents? Any idea on the camera specific numbers?

There will always be those lower on the totem pole innovating and trying to gain market share and there will be some very sharp brains working for some of those companies ensuring that they have some great feature(s) and a good business model.

Forget this misguided notion that one company will ever consistently give us the best of everything. It's the nature of the beast and the reason the technology is so advanced for any of them is precisely due to this competition. What's best today will be bettered by someone tomorrow.

Competition is the driver and competition ensures that no single company will have it all, indefinitely - be thankful, get used to it and quit whining. ;)

Canon congratulating itself. This is not interesting.
Prove you are an "innovator" and show us a state-of-the-Art FF mirrorless camera. I am not holding my breath. 8)

So mirrorless is the only definition of innovation? What a small world you live in.

Re: Canon’s Focus on Innovation Once Again Lands Imaging Leader a Top Five Spot Among U.S. Patent Ho

Most sane people perceive the sensor in the 5D4 at 30MP is great whereas the sensor in the 6D2 is perceived as not good enough for a recent release.

Canon may have suffered quite a lot of reputational damage with the 6D2 release, but it is arguably not to do with innovation and patents, but how fast their best technology filters down to lower models.

The possible reputation loss perhaps would have been prevented with a sensor at the same dynamic range as 5D4. Canon has no one to blame for pitching the 5D4 at 30MP instead of say, 36, which would have been perceived as enough of a jump from the 6D2 resolution to hold its own sales-wise without crippling the dynamic range of the weaker camera. Let's face it, the 6D series is crippled enough with the 1/4000 shutter for typical professionals; they don't need to be churlish with the sensor quality.

Haha, I totally agree with you here. Most people after "innovations" are really after innovations they can understand. Even totally, something truly unique such as dual-pixel raw (Canon) and dual native iso (panasonic) are never given any attention.

It seems to those who after Sony-style innovation only want 2 things: 1) mirrorless FF with superb spec sheets; 2) something fancy they can understand.

But to be honest, as a research in training, I learned one thing over the years: true innovation are something hard to understand. If people look at promotion video mindlessly for 15s and knew what it is, it is not really that innovative...
