The forum will be moving to a new domain in the near future (canonrumorsforum.com). I have turned off "read-only", but I will only leave the two forum nodes you see active for the time being.

I don't know at this time how quickly the change will happen, but that will move at a good pace I am sure.

So my 24-70 has the front lens coating peeling off, this lens has had minimal use but is also out of warranty so I wanted to know what Canon had done for others who had the same issue. Canon tried to tell me it was fungus today!

This is a well-known problem and there is already an older post on this topic. However, it seems difficult to get a reaction from Canon on this. If you are out of warranty you are most likely on your own (as am I).
For me it seemed to start peeling of right after the warranty ended -.-

I talked to a CPS tech some months ago an he said he could replace the front lens (approx 180€), but Canon doesn't recognize it as a production defect. So far I haven't done it because I don't see the need. Of course this is highly annoying on a 2000€ lens, but so far I haven't seen any negative impact from it. However, it will be definitively bad for resale...

My personal guess is that this might be a problem with the lens cap. Maybe the lens cap sits veeery close to the lens and if there is a light pressure on the cap it connects with the lens. Just an idea. But I tend to store my lenses standing ON their lens cap, so this might cause it. Would be interesting to hear from you guys if you store your lenses similarly.

I've seen a few with this issue, and virtually none for any other lens. Mine has been fine.

What do you use to clean the lens with? Some have thought it was a fluid used to clean the lens. I've only blown mine off and never used any fluid.

Perhaps, if you searched out some of the others with the issue and compared serial numbers, it would either confirm or eliminate it being a batch issue.

For the first 12 months I had a UV filter on for protection and noticed at the 6 month mark 2 "dust spots" that wouldnt come off which in hindsight would have been the first 2 bits peeling off.
Definately not fungus and I did read the older post on this issue.
Lens is now 3 years old with minimal use (60hours). It was in the last 3 months that the majority has come off.
Cleaning has always been with a wipe of a microfibre cloth, no water or liquid.
Canon refuse to answer any questions regarding the issue, I sent 6 emails to them yesterday and each time their reply was to send it in, without answering if they had seen it before.
Lens works the same but has no resale value at all.

Just recieved this reply from Canon,

"We are not aware of an issue with the EF 24-70mm 1:2.8 L II USM wherein the coating on the front of the lens is coming off.

If an issue with any Canon product is caused by a fault in manufacturing, then repair will be free regardless of the warranty status of the product."
