Canon EOS R1 in-store demos & possible shipping delay?

Hmm...
That pattern of all those delays would make me nervous, if I was in for new gear.
... that they don’t expect to “receive the EOS R1 until December” ...
And especially when I was waiting for an R1 that would make me ... at least cry.

I hope that Canon is getting those things back up to the better again. *sigh*

Being in the US and having placed my preorder one minute after they opened, I expect B&H will ship on 11/26 and I’ll get mine 1-3 days later, the day before or the day after Thanksgiving. That’ll be almost exactly 3 years after I received my R3.

That makes two of us. I also ordered a R1 from B&H at 6:01 a.m. on the day of the announcement.

You might recall the opening statement of the Canon, U.S.A. press release announcing the EOS R1 (Emphasis mine)

Canon U.S.A., Inc. today announced that its parent company, Canon Inc. announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R SYSTEM equipped with an RF mount and is aiming for a 2024 release.

They didn't announce that it would be released in 2024, just that they were aiming for that.

You might even receive your R1 on Tuesday November 26. I pre-ordered a Canon R5 Mk2 at 6:30 a.m. and it shipped on Monday August 19 and arrived FedEx Priority Overnight on Tuesday August 20.

I expect this statement to be more accurate. Similar to the R5 Mk2, I expect Canon / Canon USA to supply B&H with enough units to fill some pre-orders that were placed on the day of the official announcement.
There were enough R5 Mk2 units in Canon's first shipment which went to B&H that orders made close to the announced ship date were filled. I placed my order the weekend before the ship date and received my camera in that first shipment (much to the chagrin of non-USA purchasers). Others placed B&H orders even later and received cameras in that first shipment. I have no idea whether this practice will be repeated with the R1.

Fair point, but if B&H does not fill pre-orders placed within the first 5 minutes of being live; there are bigger issues at stake.

Bad allocation on Canon's part or just a way for Canon to insure that all cameras in early shipments are sold? Even with this "over allocation" to B&H--and B&H had some cameras available for immediate shipment in the weeks following the ship date--Canon could be sure that all bodies in initial shipments would be sold even if it meant some markets (and some USA vendors) would have to wait before filling pre-shipment orders. I'm not sure I see a flaw in this strategy from Canon's standpoint other than that it increases B&H's dominance as the primary USA provider of Canon products.

One thing about the R1 that had multiple conflicting specs that was recently clarified with the manual was the flash sync speed in electronic shutter mode. Some sources mentioned 1/320 and others 1/400. Turns out they are both right:

It is 1/320 for full frame or 1/400 for 1.6x crop. That being said, a 1.6x crop on a 24 MP sensor leaves you with 9 MP and this is only usable with Canon speedlites, so I don't consider that very usable.

That would be a bit of a dirty trick, but fortunately for the rest of us, you're looking in the wrong part of the manual to sort out the confusion. Look under Sync Speed Priority, with that enabled the 1/320 s for FF becomes 1/400 s (and 1.6x crop gets you 1/500 s).

I wonder technically speaking what is sync speed priority? If sync speeds is being prioritized what is being deprioritized. I am not being cynical, but asking. serious question.

Flash power is being deprioritized, meaning you may get some underexposure. On the 600EX, flash duration at full power is 1/322 s, so a 1/400 s sync would be a bit underexposed. Using 1/2 power or less would be fine.

Is it the same as HSS or a clever bit of timing?
From what I can tell, it’s just timing. It doesn’t even need to be clever, really. Thus the caveats about underexposure, including a callout for wireless flash with positive FEC.

In fact, while I stated that 1/2 power would be ‘fine’ that may not be true. But, the duration (600EX) at 1/2 power is 1/1050 s so there’s probably enough timing flexibility to fit that into a 1/400 s exposure.
