Canon EOS R5 Mark II user feedback and discussion

Got the R5mk2 yesterday. My shop got 10 units so I would say Croatia got 20 units all together.
First impressions:
In video modes heavily dependent on the new battery which are currently hard to get.
The eye control af doesn’t seem to work vertically at all and horizontal not even close as it was working on R3 with my eye. Actually I used it successfully on the R3 even through polarised glasses.
Also it managed to freeze in 4k raw 50 when waking from standby mode. It happens 2 times and I had to turn off the camera to be able to use it. (First image)
8k50 raw with RF 24-70 /2.8 has this aura visible with all the lens corrections turned on in camera. It is not visible in 4K raw modes.
I didn’t notice it until I’ve put it in resolve. (Second image)
also the rubber hot shoe cap does not fit well on the original R5.
Video is nice, much cleaner image and lineskip modes seam a bit better than the one in the R5 (need more testing of that)
4k raw has some moire in some patterns, you can tell it is line skipped but it is nice and sharp. I would say it feels a bit artificially sharpen.
I hope the Biggs are just software problems and they will be fixed with the next firmware.

Did you guys encounter any?

Makes sense, and it looks like all the batteries were sent to B&H.

Hopefully that's a firmware thing, but I have seen other mentions of this.

Interesting, but definitely can be fixed in firmware or a software update

Thanks for some real input, maybe we should have a thread for instant sort of feedback of what people notice. Good, bad or otherwise. Way too many people have "full reviews" out already, which is completely disingenuous.

The store where I bought mine (Cameranu in the Netherlands) added a complimentary LP-E6P to my order, but noted that while the R5II shipped yesterday, the extra battery will take a while to show up.

That is interesting, I was planning to do a test with the RF16mm to see how the footage would look when imported into FCP directly. I wasn't sure if the lens corrections would be done by the camera, the external RAW converter tool or the editor.

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II has officially launched today and the camera is in a lot of peoples hands. We think it's a good idea to get user feedback in one place in real time. We don't believe any “full review” that is currently circulating can possibly be truly accurate, as we all find different things in a camera and there needs to be a certain amount of time spent with a camera to get a full breakdown of what's good, what's bad and whatever else we find. We see that there is currently stock of pretty much everything

Here is a link for the new DPP4 version 4.19.10.0. With this version you can also open the RAW files in DDP. Does anyone have an idea where I can get the new Eos utility? I need the USB driver. The image transfer via the Windows 11 app works - but it is not convenient.

This “issue” will not be corrected in firmware. The R5 Mk II needs more power for a.o. 8k video, pre-shot buffering etc. than the older batteries can deliver. See this post: https://www.canonrumors.com/the-canon-eos-r5-mark-ii-will-not-function-with-third-party-batteries/

Check the manual for the features that will not work with an old battery type.

Canon states the new battery delivers, "...higher continuous power and two-times the amperage," and TDP states, "While the LP-E6NH (2130 mAh) and LP-E6N (1865 mAh) will power the R5 II, certain features, including the fastest drive speed, pre-continuous shooting, and most advanced video features will not be available."

I doubt a firmware update will magically allow more power delivery from older batteries. YMMV.

I doubt that it would need more power for 24 fps vs. 30 fps. I can understand not getting the 60 fps because of the power. But if it can do 30 fps theoretically it should do 24 fps, I think it’s canon who choose not to offer it so we buy more batteries! correct me if I’m wrong!!!

I suppose that’s possible. We will probably never know. If you’re correct, what makes you think Canon would correct that in firmware as you suggested? If it’s a technical issue, there’s a possibility they can fix it…if it’s a marketing decision that makes them money, why would they? This is a case where if you’re right, you almost certainly aren’t getting what you want.

But more likely, it’s a technical issue. Far too many people on this forum seem to wear tinfoil hats.

Not owning a R5 II, but can still share this:
- Wish the body/size/ergonomics were more in line with the 5D series. Those cameras were really nice in that regard

- Wish it had a built-in GPS: those who don't need it could have turned it off and save battery life if that's an issue for them. But for travel photography, especially in remote places where a smartphone is useless anyways, it's great. And even in non-remote places, I don't need/want to have a smartphone with me all the time (and bluetooth pairing is not always working well).

Just my opinion.
