CRguy apparently missed an important announcement, so I'm reposting the press release from Canon USA. This is a biggie, it should end forum whining forever.

Canon Officially Launches the Design Your Own Camera Program

MELVILLE, N.Y., April August 1, 2024 — Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today launched a new program for professional and amateur photographers intended to ensure they can achieve the results they need. The Design Your Own Camera (DYOC) Program enables Canon customers to specify the exact features they want in a camera, and Canon will build that camera to their specifications, specifically for them. Earlier this year, Canon Inc. celebrated that the company's interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and mirrorless cameras) have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 21 consecutive years from 2003 to 2023. Despite that, it is clear that certain individuals understand the camera market better than Canon and those individuals deserve to have their needs addressed.

DYOC is “Ahead of the Game”
Canon’s DYOC Program will enable users to select from a wide menu of available features to meet their needs. Importantly, the DYOC Program will enable users exclude features they don't want, such as video recording capability that we have recently come to understand adds to the cost of cameras. Some of the key features that can be selected in the DYOC Program include:
  • Sensor size and resolution ranging from 1" (to make lens focal length longer) to medium format* and 2 MP to 100 MP
  • Still-image shooting speeds up to 100fps
  • Strong video capabilities up to 12K RAW, or no video options installed
  • Single or dual card slots with any combination of SD, CF, CF Express Type B, or 3.5" floppy disk media†
  • No grip or integrated grip in regular and extra-large sizes
  • Mode dial or mode selection button
  • Battery Pack LP-E17, LP-E6Q or LP-E19N
  • Modern or retro body styling
DYOC helps users “Master the Moment”
"Whether a user needs a stills-oriented ultra-high resolution camera, a hybrid camera delivering top quality 12K video with Canon Log 4, or a 2 megapixel camera with a Hello Kitty™-shaped shutter button, our new DYOC program will provide exactly what the user needs. Even though we have led the camera market for 21 years, we recognize that individual users understand the needs of the camera market much better than we do, so we developed the DYOC program just for them," said Go Tokura, head of Canon's Imaging Division.

Price and Availability
Cameras produced through Canon's DYOC Program are expected to be available in the Fall of 2024 and will ship on the 6th Tuesday of each month. The estimated retail price of each camera will depend on the features specified by the user, but in no case will the estimated retail cost be affordable by the user.

For more information, please visit www.usa.canon.com.

* Medium format sensors are only compatible with the RF 28-70mm f/2L USM and TS-E lenses when used with the Canon EF-EOS R Mount Adapter.
† Use of 3.5" floppy disk media requires selection of the extra-large integrated grip option.

No BYODIYSTPLM (Bring Your Own Do It Yourself Swappable Third Party Lens Mount)? Clearly Canon is d**med!

Additional stickers and labels will be an option, you can get stickers with other brandnames (S*ny wil come at extra cost because of all the notes and fine print in the specifications). You can also use any number you like, e.g. you can call it R1, or R3 Mk II, or 7D Mk III, or M-whatever number you like. There is an optional set with flagship stickers. Optional, so you get to decide wether your DYOC camera is a flagship or just a Mk-something re-hash.

A rebranded Sonie can never be a "Mk-something re-hash".
It must be named EOS A9 Acme UD, "UD" for Ultra Dreadnought, the flagship of flagships!
People wanting the real thing made in camera heaven by sonni will have to pay a huge premium, of course. Happily!

The European car manufacturers will be put out of business by the Chine company BYD = Build Your Dreams, which seems like DYOC.

Where did all those "all I want is a plain old stills camera* guys go?
I'm still here.
I just don't use video, but happy about video features. I learned from this forum that EVF + LCD need video features, and the person buying my used-sorry, pre-owned- camera after a few years will certainly want them!
So, if I could buy a "stills only", I wouldn't buy it, even though I never shoot videos.

I don't see it in such an extreme way, but the risk of some car companies running out of business is nevertheless high!
Cars are still an important status element for many customers, though less than a decade ago.
