The Canon PowerShot G1 X successor should appear some time in the next 2 weeks. We have heard it will be announced at CP+, however another source has said it will be announced the following week on the 18th of February.

Canon considers this segment a “top of the line” product and it will probably be priced as such. You can expect a smaller and lighter body, a big boost in image quality (sensor size is unknown at this time), DIGIC 6, along with the expected GPS and WiFi features. Availability is said to be in late April/early May.

If it has swivel screen, high quality Video with livestream capabilities (including live video to HOA), f/1.4 lens 24mm - 80mm equiv... I'll be interested. Don't care about the viewfinder at all, it can only be mediocre at best in a small camera like this.
"You can expect a smaller and lighter body, a big boost in image quality " Looks like fast lens (big) and swivel screen are out of the question. Just hope that Canon give us a fast AF

Available early in May? That means mid June , which is seriously dissapointing. It means previous years ridicolous delays will continue. The 7d announced in March, actual availability, mid December... And the 35 L II will earliest be a 2015 product... Yes I'm whining, but with good reason ;D
Except that you are wrong! It was announced Sep 1, 2009.

Actually, if my old man memory is close to working, I believe the official announcement of the 7D was around September first of 2009 and I got mine before my birthday in the first week of October 2009.

Puzzling. Troubling.

First, I don't see this really being a CR2 with no more than a possible release date and some vague references to better IQ and a smaller, lighter body. I'd need more detail to get to a CR2. And so many questions raised.

Will improved IQ come from an APS-C sensor? Would they undercut their SLR line that way? I think the current G1 X is around $650 USD -- can a new one be MORE expensive? And if you can now get the EOS-M with a zoom lens for substantially less, what's the incentive to pay more for the G1 X?

Any smaller and it gets into the EOS-M range. With the EOS-M you get a lot more versatility with interchangeable lenses (and APS-C sensor, of course).

Current dimensions:

G1 X: 4.6 X 3.2 X 2.6 (in)
EOS-M: 4.3 X 2.6 X 1.3 (in)

Would a smaller size come from eliminating the OVF? If they make the LCD a touchscreen, and how would they not at this point, the OVF is probably seen as less useful.

My guess is the swivel screen stays; many who use this camera seem to value that feature.

Given their penchant for video, do they put some variant of the 70D sensor in there and use the same swivel screen? Then, even with a premium price, it's a cheaper version of the 70D.

Well, I guess we only have two weeks or so to wait for the answers.

And if it features another slow zoom lens and tiny optical viewfinder, it will be equally unexciting.

I disagree. Slow zoom lens and the lack of viewfinder did not stop the RX100 from earning all those accolades. G1X successor needs: articulate LCD, touchscreen, dual pixel AF, size/weight reduction and that small OVF with 100% coverage (such as the one in this patent: http://petapixel.com/2012/12/11/canon-patent-reveals-a-smaller-optical-viewfinder-with-100-coverage/).

If Canon can do all the above, I'll be interested. :)

Big boost in image quality? The 70D sensor would be a small boost in image quality, and the processing of the DIGIC 6 would likewise be a small boost in JPEG image quality. So is that what passes for a "big boost in image quality" or are they doing something else, like an exceptional lens or better sensor technology than in the 70D? It's hard for me to believe they'd introduce new sensor tech in a product such as this, so I'm at a loss.

So as to consider it announced March... unless you meant 7d2 which in that case you should have said ... 7d2 maybe? ::)

I thought my sentence followed the timeline from the G1x rumor past the 35 L II and the mentioning of 2015 at the end made it clear, but no.. But yeah, 7d2.. :p
