Canon PowerShot G3 X Specifications

Re: New Powershot G3 X - photos leaked

For everyone that will complain about no EVF, I'll attempt to squash this.

1) This isn't that kind of camera. The goal of cameras in this class is to be small, light, and inexpensive. If you need the precision and professionalism of a viewfinder, you probably shouldn't be using a small sensor super zoom.

2) In my opinion, I like my small cameras WITHOUT a viewfinder. Such as my EOS M. Holding a tiny camera up to your eye is not only uncomfortable, but it also defeats the purpose of using a small camera. Using the screen to compose is also inherently natural to people who use cellphones to take pictures but might want to jump into something more serious. For them, this kind of camera is comfortable and familiar. Then eventually one day maybe they will make the move to a DSLR. Think business.

A long time ago I was not in need of precision or professionalism but in need to see the subject at all, when I looked through the tiny viewfinder of my powershot A520, because the display was not usable in the bright sun.

I'm not a small camera owner, I have a 5D3 and an old T1i. And sure, a point and shoot need not have a viewfinder.

But I thought that the eyepiece also served as a form of stabilization of the camera along with your hands. Losing that end of the 'stabilization chain' might be perilous on a 600mm equivalent FL -- your hands become a fairly loose gimbal at that point. I'd imagine the 600mm might only be useable in stellar light where faster shutters are possible.

Yup - I straight can't use a camera without a VF. Call me Shaky McCoffeehands.

You can have your G3 X and a viewfinder?....but it's going to cost you

I assume that the G3 X will accept the same optional electronic viewfinder that the PowerShot G1 X Mark II and EOS M3 already do. I have it for my EOS M3 and it is a nice electronic viewfinder, but it adds to the price and occupies the hotshoe on the top making it impossible to use an external flash.

Competition for the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ1000?

Looking at the specifications, there is a lot of similarity between the rumored specs of the Canon and the Panasonic camera -- 1" 20 MP sensor, long telephoto (600mm in Canon, 400mm in Panasonic), high quality lens. The Panasonic differs in having an excellent built-in EVF.

I have the Panasonic FZ1000 and agree with the formal reviews that it is an awesome camera if you can live with the fact it is as large as some small DSLRs. It currently selling for $800.

The Canon seems a bit caught in no-man's land (no person's land?) eliminating an EVF to save size, but still being too large to fit in one's pocket because of the large lens. Those for whom pocketability is essential can still get the long focal length with the Panasonic Lumix ZS50/TZ70 or the just released Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX90V (http://www.dpreview.com/products/sony/compacts/sony_dschx90v), both around $400, but both with a much smaller photo sensor.

While Canon did sort of announce a super G7X, I was wondering which identifier they would give it.

After the issues with relatively slow AF for the G7X, I wonder if they have a new AF system.

They obviously have to compete with the new Sony RX 10 II super zoom, I expect to see a ~ $800 price tag versus $1300 for the Sony, but if they are using the new Sony sensor, the price will likely be $1300.

Sony RX10 II: 24-200 f/2.8, built-in EVF, very fast AF, 813 g, no touchscreen, 4k video.

Panasonic FZ1000: 25-400 f/2.8-4 (reaches f/4 by 170mm), built-in EVF, very fast AF, 833 g, no touchscreen, 4k video.

Canon G3X: 24-600 f/2.8-5.6, no built-in EVF, AF???, weight unknown, touchscreen, 4k video unknown.

I'm not in this market. But among the three, the Sony is my pick.

It's shocking that after so many years, Canon is still struggling with basic stuff like speed of contrast based AF and low ISO dynamic range of imaging sensor. Not to mention lack of 4k video in their non-video dedicated cameras.

If they are not willing to put out more competitive products, they may as well skip the release altogether.
