The EL-5 is similar to the 600EX, so presumably this new one will be a 430EX or 470AI replacement.

I'm in need of a Canon Speedlite, but I don't use them often and I have no desire to spend $1000 on the EL-1... even the $400 EL-5 feels like too much money for the number of times I'd mount it to a camera. Used Speedlites without warranties tend to turn me away.

$250 for the v1 seems like a nice spot to be (bonus for the rechargeable battery). 76W of power is nice if I want to blind people or light-up a big room, which likely will never be needed. Nice to have it available in case I'm wrong on my future usage.

Yes! No more AA's. I have a Leica flash (Metz rebrand) that uses AA's and I hate it... worthwhile batteries are expensive and pretty dirty once they're dead.

As long as the battery is compatible with the RP or R6II batteries, I’d rather save money and leave the charger out. But that doesn’t work for everyone I suppose.

After taking out a second on my house, I bought the eye wateringly expensive EL-1 flash but it is hands down the best flash I've ever owned except for the weight. I also have the Godox AD360ii flashes but they don't hold a candle to the EL-1's recycle time. When you're running and gunning the EL-1 is hard to beat. But with the capacitors in the unit they are too heavy to put on the hot shoe of my R5. The old Metz 202 potato masher flashes were great and I don't understand why we can't do that now. The Metz would only have the flash tube in the flash part with the capacitor and everything else in the battery pack at your waist. This way the flash weighed very little and nothing like my current Boomerang flash bracket plus EL-1 setup on my R5.

Got the Flashpoint version (Zoom Li) of it free with 5DM4 in 2019 for $1,900 from Adorama. It was an adjustment to use and "see" the circular head. However, after playing with it, loved it. Since then got the R2 Pro trigger that goes with it, another 2 of the lights and the Explor 200 Pro monolight studio bundle, during Cyber Mon sale for ~$700 with taxes.

The light temperature is pretty consistent (not Einstein or Elinchrom level but very good for the price). You can really customize the groups with the trigger without having to carry different triggers or Radiopoopers for flashes and monolights. Also, with the circular head, the accessories and modifiers from GODOX or for that matter other manufacturers are easier to mount. The battery life is long.

The silly thing about the light is the charger for the battery is a cradle, which you have to carry separately as it doesn't fit in the pouch, unless the new design has added a USB-C charger directly to the light body.

Everyone that needs the EL-1 seem to love it. If I was still shooting weddings/events, I'd have a couple of them for sure.

That's great info, thank you. I think any weaknesses that may turn up for me will be overlooked by the cost/value ratio.

Interesting…I never noticed that Canon started making those. There’s one for the EL-1 but I don’t see one for the EL-5. Possibly there’s a Sto-Fen that will fit. I have those for my 600EX-RT's.

Yeah, they had dedicated ones for 600EX, 600EX II, 430EX III, El-1.
Seems the EL-5 they stopped for some reason. It doesn't have any contacts to let the camera know a bounce adapter or color filter is on the flash.

Are you sure about that? I see that the SBA-E3 is for the 600EX II-RT. It probably fits the original 600EX-RT, but if there was a Canon version available when that flash came out, knowing me I'd have bought that instead of the Sto-Fens.

Correction, the 600EX had a gel filter holder only (been too long since I owned one, memory fail).

Yeah, I have four of those little bags with the filters that I don't use.

If you want a diffuser the Canon dedicated ones but for the EL-5, you could use a velcro flash strap and pieces of gel. Honl used to make them, I don't think they're available other than used. A decade ago I did a head-to-head of several modifiers including the Sto-Fen and the Honl heavy frost diffuser.

Please Also add its also not compatible with the R5C (which has the multifunction shoe) but no firmware to support it. My EL5 is gathering dust after their online chat said it would probably be supported during pre-order.
