Imagine this:
The 1Dx truly is indeed the only 1D series body, but:
-The 5D III moves upmarket into a more 1D-like body (more rugged and better AF, but still without vertical grip) and has 32MP, Full frame, and ~4 fps.
-A new camera, similar in body to the 5D and 7D, comes along with a 1.3x sensor, and 6 fps shooting at 20MP.
-The 7D retains the 1.6x sensor, and it gets improved drastically in the next generation (7D Mark II), but without more pixels being added.
Do you like this idea? This is not a rumor, but wishful thinking.
