Re: Deal: Canon EOS 5DS R Body $2099 (Reg $3699)

Cant imagine anyone selling this for a loss as version 2 is nowhere in the horizon.
So a retailer has 3699-2099=$1600 mark up?? And Canon would perhaps have at least half of that 1600+800=2400.
3699-2400= $1299. Would that be the manufacturing cost of the camera? My math, assumptions wrong where?

Re: Deal: Canon EOS 5DS R Body $2099 (Reg $3699)

It's an astonishingly good price for the camera, and is not necessarily a one-off.

The street price for the camera now in Hong Kong for "water product" (which means grey imports INTO hong kong, often from Japan) is around the $16,650 HKD price from multiple sellers which equates to about $2,100 USD.

Just for reference, the 7D Mark II is selling for around the $7,500HKD ($955 US) mark and the 6D II around $10,760HKD ($1370 US)

No, an authorized retailer does not have that kind of markup on a camera. At $3699 USD, a US dealer's cost is likely around $3300-$3400.

I would have thought so too. Then it is fair to assume this seller is selling at a loss? Such a huge loss? Something is not fitting my brain correctly.

Of course the seller isn't selling at a loss. What you're seeing is that the price has been reduced in Asia and they're importing them. This will no doubt mean an official US price reduction soon.

And don't care what anyone says, this kind of price reduction has to mean clearance, which has to mean something new is in the works.

Markup big. Find retail staff price. Then you know cost. Look ebay. Common find non-US 5D MarkIV sellars less $2700.

$2099 record low.
Wow.

These are grey market items, they aren't being purchased from Canon. I know some stock is purchased from overstock or unwanted stock at retailers, so yes, they sell them to the grey market sellers for a loss. I don't know if there are other avenues they get stock from.

Retail staff pricing is generally not "dealer cost". Sometimes Canon will have a "retail sales" deal for staff members. So it's dealer cost minus say 10% or 20%.

All you really need to do is get the CPS price in say Canada to know what dealer cost is. The USA doesn't have a similar program as far as I know. The dealer sells the camera to the CPS Canada member for "dealer cost" and then Canon Canada will provide a 5% rebate to the dealer.

The markup on cameras and lenses is quite small.

So you're saying then that Canon keeps most of the profit from their authorized resellers (distributors) who make up for the smallish markup they can get with volume of sales on Canon products, or at least, the higher-end Canon gear. I would wonder if there is more profit for the resellers in say, the Rebel line and the M-line-up? Intriguing to ponder over. Thanks for all the great info you provide here (in this forum)!

Re: Deal: Canon EOS 5DS R Body $2099 (Reg $3699)

I just don't understand who needs this camera? I have 40x60 inch enlargements from my 5D2 and 5D3 cameras that look great. The newer 5D4 (which I now own) is up to 30MP. You can easily upsize this in Photoshop to any realistic print size needed (as I did with my 22MP and 24MP files from the previous models).

If you look at the even lower MP count on their top 1DX and 1DX2 cameras, obviously a lot of professionals don't need 50MP. For low light I assume (have not tested it) that 5D4 (and 3 and 2) are better due to larger pixel size. Which brings me back to my original question: who needs this camera?

Re: Deal: Canon EOS 5DS R Body $2099 (Reg $3699)

Deal is gone from eBay (back to $2400), but it's still only $2,197 directly on their website. I've bought two 5DsR bodies from them, one off eBay, and one from their website. They worked perfectly – in fact, better than the refurbished one I bought directly from Canon, which had oil splatter on the sensor I couldn't remove with a wet cleaning.

Only things to note about these: 1) The charger will have a cord instead of the built-in swivel plug; 2) Unless you can read the foreign default language, you have to look at the camera manual online and figure out which menu panel and choice is the one for changing the language to English. and 3) They will try to sell you their extended warranty, but they are polite and don't push it if you're firm about it.

Best to never try one, then. Once you become accustomed to being able to crop to extend your zoom's range or to turn your prime into a zoom, you may not want to go back to 24mp. And at this price, it's a similar cost the 5D3 at Best Buy. That said, you don't need what you don't need, right?

Good friend make dealer price sale.

Amazing price... I take note that both the 5DIV and the 5DS fell rapidly after their intro. And now you can get the 5DS/R for a steal.

Got my own 5DS/R very early for a "good" price. But nothing like this. Seems waiting just a few months after launch is the way to go when you want a new DSLR...

Grey Market sellers do not lose money. They take advantage of the fact that Canon products are often priced much lower in poor countries, and sometimes get a very good deal.

From Wikipedia:
Grey market goods are legal, non-counterfeit goods sold outside normal distribution channels by entities which may have no relationship with the producer of the goods. This form of parallel import frequently occurs when the price of an item is significantly higher in one country than another.[4] This commonly takes place with electronic equipment such as cameras. Entrepreneurs buy the product where it is available cheaply, often at retail but sometimes at wholesale, and import it legally to the target market. They then sell it at a price high enough to provide a profit but below the normal market price.
International efforts to promote free trade, including reduced tariffs and harmonised national standards, facilitate this form of arbitrage whenever manufacturers attempt to preserve highly disparate pricing. Because of the nature of grey markets, it is difficult or impossible to track the precise numbers of grey market sales.

But.. But.. Why would they be sold for a loss when they are current models? With all due respect, something does not sit well here with me.

They are not sold for a loss. The actual cost to make a camera is a fraction of the selling price. Its likely 25% or less. Canon can discount prices to poor countries and still profit, just not as much. There is value in keeping production rates up and having high end cameras even in poor countries where they really want to sell much lower priced cameras in huge quantities but have the nice ones available.

Canon makes the bulk of their profit by selling cameras to rich countries, but wants to sell them everywhere. Grey market sellers take advantage of that when they see a opportunity.
