Focusing issue 200 f2.0 L *UPDATE with samples*

Hi guys!

Seems yet again I can't catch a break...

My 200 f2 have a varying focusing issue on the left cross type points, two last rows. I will focus in front more often than not, but I have all sorts of different degrees of sharpness. On the right side and center it locks so fast and so accurate it's insane. My 35 and 85 doesn't have this issue, so it's not the body (or?).

The lens had a perfect sharpness curve in FoCal, same as my other copy. So I shouldn't think it's decentered either.

Anyone else had this issue with any lens and perhaps have a cause for it?

Just out of curiosity, did you try running FoCal's AF point analysis?

I didn't actually because everything worked just awesome. But I will try that tonight, I was thinking also to calibrate with the point that doesn't work with both the 200 and 35, thanks

So, my brother came to visit and brought his 1dx so I could try my 200 with his camera, and the results are exactly the same as with my camera.

Left side is oof even at 5-10 meters distance getting increasingly worse at longer distances.

Has anyone had any experience in having this issue fixed? Think I read somewhere that the Super telephoto's have adjustment screws for this and can much easier get the issue corrected, is that true?

I continue my unlucky streak, that's for sure....

So the saga continues... they adjusted "a microscopic amount of decentering" of my 200 f2 so it's perfect, but the original issue remains. The took 350 dollars for the adjustment that basically did nothing.

But they told me something interesting, each af point can be adjusted in a 3D matrix for each individual lens, so they need to move the left side af points forwards for them to work with the camera. So the 1dx is shipped today to hopefully get my stuff to work.

My questions are, how can this be only with ONE lens out of a hundred, most with extremely thin dof, and how come I have never had this issue with any body lens combo the last 12 years? And how come the lens behaves exactly the same with my brothers 1dx and not with a single other lens on his camera? And what happens if I buy another body? Do I have to keep paying to adjust the bodies to this one lens "that is optically 100% perfect" ??

A camera body has a data table with parameters for each Canon lens. If, for some reason, a particular lens is not up to par, they can test the lens and their software will update the data in the camera to reflect that for either just that lens, or for all. A issue with a extremely shallow depth of field might apply to all lenses, but only be noticeable on some lenses.

Lets hope it gets sorted out.

Yeah, new too. It's still weird because this is my second 200 f2.0 and the other one was perfection on the 1dx, luckily I don't own 5-6 bodies I need to calibrate it to. And when it works it's my favorite combo, and hopefully will work at least 4 years when I upgrade to a 1dx2.
