• UPDATE

The forum will be moving to a new domain in the near future (canonrumorsforum.com). I have turned off "read-only", but I will only leave the two forum nodes you see active for the time being.

I don't know at this time how quickly the change will happen, but that will move at a good pace I am sure.

Audiophil published on their website:
Wir garantieren...
dass in diesen Jahr kein Nachfolger der Canon EOS 5DMkII auf den Markt kommt.
Ansonsten nehmen wir die Kamera zum vollen Kaufpreis zurück!!
For those who do not speak or understand German, it says:
We guarantee… that into this year no successor Canon EOS 5DMkII comes on the market. Otherwise we take the camera back to the full purchase price!!
Audiophil in Aachen is a major photo gear distributor.

Kindest regards,

Stany

I'd say it's simply a gamble on their part to be able to better sell the 5s. The chances of the 5D MarkIII coming out this year are pretty low. And I would assume that they mean possible to buy, not being announced, though that could be something a judge might have to decide when push comes to shove.
And even if it does come out, question is how much will they actually loose? I doubt they are selling the 5s in the hundreds a week. The reason they do this is obviously because they think they are not selling enough. So they will sell more units now and if the MarkIII really comes out this year they will have take a couple back (certainly while selling the MarkIIIs instead) They'll write off the losses but have made sure that there are some very happy customers with obviously large pockets out there that will stick with buying stuff from them.

Sounds like a low risk scenario to me...

ForceFlow is right on the money.

I wonder if the fine print of the offer says the customer has to buy a 5D3 from them within a certain time of becoming available? If so, they're being very clever and it might be win win for them... if the 5D3 isn't announced they just made a sale If it does get announced, they'd take back the 5D2 and sell a 5D3 which would, at full introduction pricing, have a higher profit for the store than the current price of 5D2. They'd probably be able to sell 5D2 used for not much less than new and overall they make money in either scenario.

One more angle on that...

We don't know yet how much better the 5D3 is going to be over the 5D2... customers who buy the 5D2 from them now and have the chance to return it for the 5D3 might decide the improvements in the 5D3 are not worth the extra dough.
