R3 Firmware 1.4 Released

EOS R3 Firmware Version 1.4.0

Firmware Changes

1. Adds support for Speedlite EL-5.*

*The automatic light intensity adjustment of the AF-assist beam is not supported.

2. Adds [Register people priority] to the camera menu. Pre-registered people can now be detected and tracked with priority.**

** This feature may not operate if faces are too small to detect, in profile or turned at an angle or partially hidden; for scenes where the subject is moving; or due to certain shooting environments.

  1. Adds [Save/load comm. settings on card] to the camera menu. Network settings can now be transferred between cameras of the same model.
  2. Adds [Panning Assist] to the camera menu. When a compatible lens is used for panning shots, image stabilization and subject blur correction are applied during the exposure.
  3. Improves the Auto White Balance (AWB) setting to reduce the time it takes for the AWB result to be reflected in the camera's viewfinder's display when looking through the viewfinder.
  4. Adds Protect Images During [FTP Transfer] to the camera menu. Images transferred via FTP can now be automatically protected. The user can determine if images have already been transferred via FTP.
  5. Fixes minor issues.
Too bad that the new AF features from Canon R6 Mark II is not in update

Curious to see how this new register people’s face in menu function is going to work. Wish you could do it on the fly, while taking pictures (with joystick, perhaps), by quickly selecting a face for camera to track and not other faces rather than doing it via menu. Have no idea how this works. I’m sure we will find out soon enough
Yep. For me, the most interesting scenario would be finding my kid in a soccer match. But, it seems to be squarely in the list of caveats for the feature. I tried eye control, but it isn't fast/accurate enough to be useful in that setting. Will try it out anyway to see if it helps at all. Still, there are plenty of other settings where the subject (not just the kids) are one of many in the frame and this would save some time with the bouncing around to get the focus on the desired one.
I agree that it would be nice to be able to select a preferential face on the fly, but pre-registered can still be very useful. It remains to be seen how well it performs.
