The forum will be moving to a new domain in the near future (canonrumorsforum.com). I have turned off "read-only", but I will only leave the two forum nodes you see active for the time being.

I don't know at this time how quickly the change will happen, but that will move at a good pace I am sure.

RingType USM vs. STM/NanoUSM

Which one do you prefer and think to be better?

  • I prefer Ring-type USM as it supports Full Time Manual focusing.

  • I'm using my camera in A+ mode only so I don't really care.

  • I'm shooting videos many times so I prefer STM/NanoUSM.

In my opinion the Focus by Wire technology with the Initial focus reset "feature" is good for videographers and A+ mode users only. For still and especially for macro photographers the Ring-type USM motor is much better since it supports Full Time Manul focusing.
As AF doesn't always work in macro photography if you want to go beyond lifesize magnification the FTM feature is a must for me. I think Canon should release EF-V lenses for videographers with FBW and EF(-S) lenses for still photographers with the Ring-type USM technology.

I am into stills photography. So my preferences for AF are:

sharp and accurate

as fast as possible

FTM whenever I think AF is doing something I don't want

and if it was silent then this was a nice-to-have feature
And some video guy once told me that he'd always prefer MF and throw focus only, because video AF was doing everything but what he wants. But maybe this has changed with the latest generations of DPAF or else.

For low cost consumer lenses, the nano USM seems wonderful compared to older systems. Of course, we want the most for our money, but we won't see pro level performance in beginner lenses. The nano USM is getting close and I would not hesitate to use it if the lens fitted my needs.

It even has full time manual focus while your camera is set to one shot.

Fast and incredibly quiet, the EF-S 18–135mm f/3.5–5.6 IS USM’s new NANO USM AF system not only delivers high speed AF, but also makes quiet, fast and smooth AF transitions that can be ideal for movie recording. Combining ring USM and STM (lead-screw type) features, the diminutive chip-shaped ultrasonic motor is engineered to help deliver high-speed, smooth, precise and near-silent operation, plus full time manual focus (when using one-shot AF).

I suppose that the rumored new 18-55 kit lens will get nano USM as one of its major changes.
I don't think that it will change much in optics, but I suppose that Canon is also trying to lower the production costs.
