Shutter issue??

Notice the banding on the far left side of the frame. Does not happen on every shot. Does not happen on any horizontal shots. Shot with 1dx and 400mm f/2,8L III.

Short answer: Yes could be a shutter problem. I'd ask Canon service about their opinion.

But before that maybe look at possible other factors.

You say that this only appears sporadically and only in portrait orientation?
With 1DX and grip this would be the top of shutter/pic in landscape orientation, but the bottom of the shutter as the projection on sensor is turned arround, correct?
==> So never at the top in landscape orientation. Hmm... maybe gravity helps the shutter here...

Some other aspects:

• Does it appear only with the big and heavy lenses like the 400/2.8? Or with smaller ones, too? ==> Mount problem?
• Does it appear with specific CF cards or with any card? ==> SW problem?

I really hope, you'll find a solution for this.

I had exactly the same problem with a Leicaflex a few years ago, could fix it by tightening a screw....won't go for a Copal shutter.
The issue is named shutter-bounce because the blades are bouncing back and so overexposing that "band" on the left.
Guess you need a new shutter...

Hi I have the same on my 1DsIII, nothing I do is “mission critical” so I have decided to wait until it quits and assess new shutter vs EF-Rxx.
I find it shows up more on shots above 1/250th than it does on longer exposures, I guess the shorter the exposure the larger percentage effect the bouncing shutter has.
Expect the problem to show up on landscape shots soon at some point.

Take a few shots from a slow shutter speed to high. Say 1/30 , 1/200/ 1/800, 1/2000, 1/8000. Values don't matter, just pick a few.

It its a shutter, it usually starts failing first at high shutter speeds while slow ones are fine.

I needed a new shutter. Mt Spokane Photography, yes the problem was worse the higher the shutter speed. Just for reference, the new shutter with my 30% CPS discount cost me $290, without the discount and free shipping, it would have been about $420.
